Is this a Carter N carb.?

Recommended Posts

In a previous post I talked about having issues making my k301 Kohler run on a china carb. This is the carb that came with the non running c120 I bought.

Is this a Carter N?  Someone wrung off the butterfly screws and I need a butterfly. Debating on rebuilding this one. It has red paint on it but I see no name but I assume it's the original carb from the tractor. The seller had replaced with a china carb but never got running and let the newly installed china carb set up with old gas.

Roll it over... If it's a Carter N, it will be marked on the other side.

No I see no markings The carb is old so I doubt it's a foreign replacement. Just my opinion. I also see the mounting flange on the Carter pictured is not slotted but closed around the bolt holes.

Pretty sure that's the Kohler carb then....  The Carters are all marked as far as I know... and the Walbros are marked with their LME number around the same spot.

Here's a link to the Kohler carb reference manual.  http://www.smallenginesuppliers.com/html/engine-specs/kohler/Kohler_Carburetor_Reference_Manual_TP-2377-E.pdf

Yes but > see NO markings on this old carb.It was not installed on tractor when I got it. Seller claimed he had replaced with the china version and gave me the old one. It does have matching red paint like the WH si I can only assume it IS the factory carb. The Carter carbs in the link all have closed mounting flanges where mine are slotted like the chinese one.

Looking at some used carb on ebay the carb I have looks like a Walbro. At least the upper part of throttle shaft anyway.

Where can I get the missing butterfly?

I don’t have any old ones laying around. Maybe someone else does though. If it’s the choke plate the fit isn’t super critical. Use a Chinese carb plate.

It's not the choke it's the other one.

If you strip the old paint off with some lacquer thinner I suspect the Walbro number will show up.  All my WH Kohlers have Walbro carbs.

Take a Dremel and grind those screws flush with the shaft so you can pull it out.  You might try your luck at drilling out the old screws with a tiny drill bit, then running a small tap in to see if the screws will go out the back side.

So you think it's a Walbro huh? I dont believe it's a Carter and certainly not china made.

That is most definitely a Kohler built carb. Nearly identical to the Carter N. The Walbro has different looking needles and would be pretty obvious if you had one in your hand. I dont have a photo handy.

Look in the carb bore from the choke end. Is there a number cast in?

I have a Carter "N" in my hand.  There is a number 2-127 on that throttle butterfly.  I do not see any number on mine in the choke end.  I do have a bunch of pictures of 2 Carter "N"s if you think they might help.  It sure looks like a carter "N" to me...but mine do have the Carterr N on the carb body.

I do have a number 1626 right above where the gas feed screws in.  I also have a number #83747SA on the casting where the gasket goes.

I dont see a thing on mine anywhere. I am not sure it's a Carter because the mounting flanges are slotted. Carters are not.  Walbro maybe???

Post one and let's compare. Now I am hearing Walbros are junk from someone on another site. So hope mine isn't a Walbro I guess.

I found a number on it by using some paint stripper. Here's the number located under where the inlet nipple screws in.......C 236315.  So what do I have?

This Kohler carb manual may help.

In book form there is a left and right page. Keep that in mind.

Check for numbers on the mounting flange too. Numbers or letters on the throttle plate help too. I've got throttle plates if you still want one. Let me know.
