ed herr 1 #1 Posted October 4, 2019 My father has a 74 D180 automatic.Trans temp. pegged at 250F after 10 min running. Using Pennzoil 10w 30 and a O.E. filter. for years and is changed regularly. The gauge had not been working for sometime which the owner didn't realize.Replaced gauge and sender with the same temp. increments which is not O.E. I was not able to find one. Removed coupler off pump to flywheel...splines are all there, no play. Tractor moves normal with no abnormalities. This machine came with no fan or cooler. Any suggestions ? 953 nut 55,776 #2 Posted October 4, 2019 I would suggest you first verify the temperature. If you know someone in the Heat/AC or electrical business they would have a non-contact thermometer or you could spritz a little water onto it to see if it flashes to steam. A small 12 volt electric fan connected to the "A" terminal of the ignition switch should help too. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

pacer 3,174 #4 Posted October 4, 2019 This post brings to mind --- just WHAT IS a normal temp on these? They DO get hot, but what is considered hot? My first thought is 250° doesnt sound all that bad? None of mt "D's" have a gauge.... Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

ed herr 1 #7 Posted October 4, 2019 I greatly appreciate the manuals ! The flow charts and breakdowns are just what I need. I'm a retired auto tech so that's very helpful. No telling how long this has been this way with a broken gauge. I have had 3 former dealer WH mechanics say they will be hot and that's normal as long as it's operating normal.Well I'm going by the owners manual and don't want to ruin anything, especially when parts are few and far between. There are no shavings in the oil or filter which is a good thing. I'm going to put on a pressure gauge and see where we're at. If it comes done to it I'll install a fan or a cooler but that's all up to what dad wants to do. He may even want to sell it. Well I have some reading and troubleshooting to go over so...
