D160 Onen 1975

Please help!  We're having carb issues with my son's Wheel Horse D160.  We've found that if we put a new fuel pump on it, it runs great for a while, then it starts sputtering and acting like the carb needs cleaning.  Which has been done.  We're hoping to find one of two things.  first off, does anyone know a part number for this carb?  it's the odd square style one, and everytime I do a search for one, ones that look very different come up.  Does anyone know a good site to get one?  I also read another thread where someone said that the float could be the problem and they said that they ordered just the float on ebay.  I cant find one of those either.  We're willing to give anything a try at this point. My son wants to use this tractor so badly, and we just cant seem to get it running right. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated.

You're headed the right direction with cleaning I believe, but I'm no Onan expert.

You'll likely need to replace ALL the fuel line and start fresh.

@Crazywheelhorseman

@Dieselcowboy

@Super-C 4 me

Do you folks know anyone local to you that could help out with parts or labor?

@onanparts.com or @boomers_influence these are our ONAN specialist but as far the carb you will need the engine spec and serial numbers just like any other engine brand and if you have carb off there's numbers on there too. I have the more modern P220G onans with the Nikki carbs so I'm not positive what you will need.

I think? you have one of the BF, BG, B43m, B48m engines (I have one in a MF) If so the carb itself is rare to extinct, but kits for it are all over the bay with varying components from $15 up. The Onans for some reason can be really finicky in tuning and the carb does need to be just right.

Heres an example of one of the kits on the bay......

Could also be something floating in the tank choking off the fuel supply, a plugged up filter, weak fuel pump or it could need a valve job. Hard to say without seeing it run. I'm only about 15-20 minutes away from you @Shannon maybe I can come up and take a look at it for you.

Thank you all so much for the reply's.  @Crazywheelhorseman, that would be great!  @pacer, i had seen a couple of those kits, but I don't see the float in them?  Shouldn't it come with a float?  I've also heard some say that switching to a better made float can help, but again, I cant find the floats anywhere, even in those kits.  I'll check into the vent for the gas cap @bcgold.  Again, I want to thank you all for the quick responses.  Really hoping to get this D running good.  My son (13) is a wheel horse fanatic.  Started with a B80 last year.  He has a small farmstand that he pulls around the neighborhood with it.  He was very excited to upgrade to the D, both for pulling the wagon, as well as to do some of the garden work next year.  He is so anxious to have it running right.  He also plowed some driveways in the neighborhood with the B80 and he hopes to be able to do that with the D once it's running right.

You need to feed that poor boy! :thumbs: --- hes only 13?????

Heres link to some brass floats, there was also a plastic type but I think they were replaced with the brass (I dont think the plastic could leak!). If you got the brass type you should be able to shake it and quickly feel if it has leaked.

Boy have you found the right place for that!!!

This is a great site where he and you will get all the information and all the help you'll ever need... And maybe even make a friend or 2.

B80 was my first Wheelhorse not long ago. Now my honey and I have 4. Hers are 657, 867 and my B and a C160.

 We have meet n greets and during the year and the show section will tell you where all the local small engine folks are on whatever weekend.

(Next week New Milford CT)

Had one up here in Southern Maine a few weeks ago.

Keep asking questions.

We'll get your son running the D around in no time.

Thank you @pacer.  I'm going to check out that link.  And you are right!  He is following in his Daddy's footsteps.  :D   One of the reasons he loves the D, he sais he doesnt feel so big on it, but he is very comfortable on the B80 and that little tractor packs a powerful punch.  He recently aquired a free 12 horse slightly newer craftsman, and since it has lights he decided to use it for his farmstand cart last week.  We have a very big hill next to our house, and the B80 doesn't even struggle pulling that cart up it, even full of pumpkins.  The Craftsman, definitely struggled.  He said he was going back to his B80 next week even if he had to carry a flashlight. ;)   We actually follow him with our golf cart for safety, which has headlights and tail lights.

Thank you @ebinmaine for the welcome!  My father has been part of Redsquare for quite a while now and he knew I would find the answers I needed here.  I'm enjoying just checking out all of the different posts.  We did check out a couple local shows this summer, but we're hoping to go to more next year.  It's something that we all look forward to very much.
