Feel free to scold me if this belongs in electric lol. Took my starter apart for painting and found this mess. Is this salvageable or should i be asking if anyone has a starter for sale?

If you can't find a new starter I don't see why you can't reglue the magnets if you have all the pieces. It is done on flywheels. Just clean everything up and use a thin layer of jb weld clamp it for a day and go

Even if you get a new starter fix that one and keep it as a  spare. I just did the magnets on my 418 and it is working fine on a flywheel doing 3600 rpm.on stationary magnets in a starter it should be no problem.

When magnets break, the polarity reverses. I would take all the broken magnet out & test it. If it works, fine, if not, I would sell anything still O.K. & scrap the rest. Personally, I would replace it. I would quest ion depedability in cold weather.

i was hoping this was a possible option, its only one major chunk that broke off so ill give it a go. Its an interesting tid bit of info R.L. Addison gave with the polarity of broken magnets changing. I never knew that. Hopefully the large piece didn't reverse polarity and just the little piece Im going to reglue will have flipped. Im thinking this will only result in a slightly weaker motor

My '68 Electro 12 was a legendary hard starter for my grandfather. It has the old embossed name American Bosch starter .. but it's nearly identical to a Kohler starter.

Got the thing so hot the magnets shattered in a few places on both poles.
I took out some hefty chunks of material. It's still working as good as new over 7 years later.

I've glued a few B&S magnets but only seen one bad K series starter, and that one is still going to this day, on a 14hp K series with a broken decompressor. Pushes it over just fine.

No way you'll ever get the two broken magnet halves to meet again they will repel each other. You can see the tip of the broken wedge is attracted to the other side as it is being repelled from its original home.
