Mudrig150 313 #1 Posted October 1, 2019 (edited) So I've been working on my K241, I have a 30mm walbro carb on it, but we need it for our new cub, plus I did find the original carter 26mm carb. Brand new from Kohler still in the bag, but the previous owner broke the choke shaft in two and buggered up the throttle shaft screws. I want to rebuild it, and I have the butterfly plates, but I'm stumped as to where I could find the choke shaft and the screws. I might just buy a new carb and steal them from it, because honestly, I don't trust the 30$ amazon carbs. What do you guys think? The Tuul Crib 7,338 #2 Posted October 1, 2019 I know that l am tired of these &$):,!&@! Chinese carbs ! Seems that they are never right. Just have to pay attention to what you are buying online! Goodluck! JMO
lynnmor 7,568 #3 Posted October 1, 2019 Make a new shaft or have a machine shop make it.
ebinmaine 70,789 #4 Posted October 1, 2019 Can't rely on the Chinese carb shaft being the correct size. Best to get a hold of a used correct original carb and rebuild that.
Mike'sHorseBarn 3,141 #5 Posted October 1, 2019 I've had good luck with these carb's. https://isavetractors.com/carburetors/kohler-carburetors/ 1 1
Mudrig150 313 #6 Posted October 1, 2019 (edited) Might just buy a used 26 mm carb to steal screws from. I don't want to waste a literally brand new carb just because the screws are broke. Edited October 1, 2019 by Mudrig150
Mudrig150 313 #7 Posted October 2, 2019 Yep, suspicions confirmed. Found the old Kohler parts bag for the carb. Looked pretty old, too. So that's essentially a brand new carb.
richmondred01 2,289 #8 Posted October 2, 2019 Brian Miller in MO has the correct shaft and screws.
Mudrig150 313 #9 Posted October 3, 2019 Where is the best place to get a 4-40 drill and tap set? Every set I've seen have 2 kinds of reviews: A-They used it once and it worked. B-They used it a few times and it broke.
ebinmaine 70,789 #10 Posted October 3, 2019 Those kinds of reviews and limited usage on most tools nowadays are an unfortunate side effect of the disposable society that we live in. I have found the same thing many many times. What I've been doing the last two or three years is try to buy from a store or chain that has a physical brick-and-mortar branch near me. That way if or when I have a problem I have a place to return it or exchange it.

We're just missing the smallest taps (because of course we are). I just need the 4-40 tap and drill bit. 4-40 is a 1/4 hole size, right? Howie 899 #13 Posted October 4, 2019 No, went out and looked at my chart a 4-40 takes a #43 drill bit. That is .089 thousands.

I was going to buy a sheet of 1/8" steel to build a flip-top seat for my 140, but it is like 70$ for an 1/8" sheet. They do have hood trim strips for like a buck a foot, so I'll have to place an order for some goodies...
Mudrig150 313 #17 Posted October 11, 2019 What's the best kind of screw to replace the old ones?
Stormin 9,983 #18 Posted October 11, 2019 Same as the old ones were.
Mudrig150 313 #19 Posted October 11, 2019 So flathead brass screws? Not steel ones or anything?
81blackhood 168 #20 Posted October 11, 2019 I just rebuilt my Kohler / Carter #26 carburetor. I had to replace the throttle shaft screws and the size on mine was 3-48 not 4-40. You might want to check yours. I bought a bag of stainless steel 3-48 x 3/16.

The reason mine have to be 4-40 is because I have to drill and tap them to a bigger size.
Mudrig150 313 #22 Posted October 28, 2019 Tractor is back together. Engine has compression and spark, now to deal with the carb... I guess I'll get a bag of 3-48x 3/16 screws, a drill bit, and a bag of 4-40 x 3/16 screws. We have a few carbs that are missing screws, that need replaced. Mudrig150 313 #23 Posted November 6, 2019 (edited) Finally got the carb rebuilt. Used my mini vice-grips and a 3-48 tap to clean out the throttle shaft holes, then drilled out and changed the choke shaft holes to 4-40. Everything went together nicely, with no busted bits or taps, and the only mishap was a crookedly drilled choke screw hole, which I'm not worried about. Might end up pulling the screws back out and putting some thread-locker on them, so they don't get ingested by the motor. Ended up going for: 2 drill bits, .089" 100 4-40x1/4" thread making screws (choke shaft) 2 taps, 3-48 100 3-48x1/4" slotted screws (Throttle shaft) 2 bits and taps in case one breaks off, and 100 screws to do other carbs. Many carburetors had the factory screws staked to prevent them from falling out. Simply support the screw head and smash the screw ends a bit with a small punch and hammer, or try pliers to pinch the end a bit. If removal is required in the future, grind off the smashed portion. The only problem is I made the screws 1/4" long instead of 3/16", so peening them is a lot harder, especially considering they are steel screws... I'm thinking threadlocker is probably the better option.
