Mickwhitt 4,811 #76 Posted November 14, 2019 Made a couple of aluminium tops for the gear shift levers today. Also started to paint the seat tray. Hood comes back from shot blasting tomorrow. (Hope I'm getting the language right, hood for bonnet lol)

(Hope I'm getting the language right, hood for bonnet lol) Shot blasting is used to do stress relieving over here. Sand blasting uses sand for rust and paint removal. Glass beading uses glass beads for a fine finish. All the same basic process, but the media varies as required.
Mickwhitt 4,811 #78 Posted November 15, 2019 Shot blasting is our generic term for cleaning metal but firing media at it using compressed air. Not sure if there are stress relieving aspects to it. The bonnet looks good and I will put it to one side till it's time to paint it. I've painted the underside of the seat tray in black gloss as a corrosion protection measure. I will be painting the upper side when its fitted. Lots more rain here today so floods are all round us. Mick 1

Mickwhitt 4,811 #80 Posted November 18, 2019 Finally started to put some red paint on the seat tray, looks good but a few more coats yet to get it as I want. I'm not doing a showroom job but I do want it to look pretty tidy. I am brush painting the tray but I think I may spray the bonnet before attaching it. Not sure as I dont have an indoor space I can spray in. A bit of dry weather would help out here lol. Busy day tomorrow with meetings for the community group. Lee1977 6,887 #81 Posted November 18, 2019 Good painting weather is hard to come by this time of the year.
Mickwhitt 4,811 #82 Posted November 22, 2019 Well I managed to get some paint on the seat tray. I'm not 100% happy with it but needs must at this time of year. Now its painted I have assembled the seat and fitted the rear lights. 2
ebinmaine 68,998 #83 Posted November 22, 2019 Looks great so far Mick. You can always wait till better weather next spring or summer and pop it off and repaint it one day.
Mickwhitt 4,811 #84 Posted November 23, 2019 I think that will be the best bet, I sprayed the final coat indoors but it was not ideal. Just the hood to do now and the footboard. Then it's time to gas her up.and get the engine running. Not sure about that yet but I will try to get the carb set up before I try to fire her up. Any advice on first time starting after a rebuild? Stormin 9,981 #85 Posted November 23, 2019 (edited) Fitting a primer bulb between tank and pump will get fuel through, without a lot of cranking. Or remove air filter and spray petrol into the carb, while turning the engine. You'll find carb settings in the manuals. Not sure off hand. Maybe 2 turns main and 1-1/4 idle. That skateboard non slip material is ideal for the footboards. Edited November 23, 2019 by Stormin 2
Mickwhitt 4,811 #86 Posted November 23, 2019 I have put a primer bulb in the fuel line so it wont be long before I bite the bullet and try to start her. Put the bonnet back on this morning just to get it out of the way. 2

Mickwhitt 4,811 #89 Posted November 23, 2019 Norm, that's from ebay, good quality panel edging strip. Going to do the bonnet edges too. Thanks to all who say it looks good. I really wasnt sure I could rebuild it after 12 years in boxes. Wait till I'm driving down the street lol. Mick
Mickwhitt 4,811 #90 Posted November 24, 2019 So, carb set to the initial settings as per the manual. Fuelled up, primed, choke on, press the starter....... Cranks over, float chamber fills..... She fires, she runs! Bit lumpy, bit of back firing but she runs. I can move on to finishing the details and making Fred looking good. I had a strip of edging strip left over and put it on the bonnet closure lip, looks neat and the bonnet closes beautifully. 2
Stormin 9,981 #91 Posted November 24, 2019 I think that bonnet/hood, would look nice silver with a black grill.
McGrew 460 #92 Posted November 25, 2019 Mick, I’ll just come out and say it... I’m jealous! I’m jealous of your home shop! I have a machine shop under my supervision at work, but it would be really nice if I had those capabilities at home. My property does not lend itself to building a shop, and my basement isn’t big enough to handle the machines I want. That is one of the reasons I still work, when I could have taken full retirement 3 years ago... i cannot see myself ever being without a milling machine and a metal lathe. I like your ingenuity, and your machine work is impressive! Danny
Mickwhitt 4,811 #93 Posted November 25, 2019 Norm, I'm just painting the grille black, then I'll have a look at the rest of the bonnet. Danny, very kind of you to say my skills are good. I'm self taught other than a short six year stint as a diesel mechanic at my local authority. I'm very happy with my machine shop and love making parts for my various projects. I could not manage without my lathes and mills. More rain here so no outdoor work for now, ground is saturated and slow draining clay so will take a while to dry out. Mickwhitt 4,811 #94 Posted December 1, 2019 Not had any time in the shop all week, we have a sick neighbour we are helping to care for and spend nights there nursing her. All hands to the pumps while she passes away as she is terminally ill I'm afraid. Makes you count your blessings for sure Mick 2 1
oliver2-44 9,929 #95 Posted December 1, 2019 @Mickwhitt Thank you for taking the time to care for your neighbor. Caring and compassionate members like you are part of what makes this forum so great. May the good Lord bless you and your neighbor. 1
Mickwhitt 4,811 #96 Posted December 1, 2019 Thank you Oliver, we seem to have lost our sense of community and care for our fellow man, but little by little we are winning it back. My wife and I try to do a little good every day, it is it's own reward. Mick 2
lynnmor 7,401 #97 Posted December 1, 2019 Our sense of community has diminished in my opinion. To bring this back to tractors, I cleared a culvert just over my property line in preparation for a hurricane only to have the property owner threaten a lawsuit and arrest., I thought I was doing a community service. Now the neighbor across the road is aging and is developing some serious medical issues, my tractors take care of snow removal and now leaf pickup. We never talked about what needed done, I just do it. Other neighbors don't hit a lick and don't even maintain their own property.
Mickwhitt 4,811 #98 Posted December 1, 2019 I had the same sort if thing, cutting trees on my boundary the neighbour complained I was stealing his privacy. Did not offer to help at all but wanted it all his way. Soon told him how things were going to be. Fred my WH will clear paths and drives as well as work on our community land. Mickwhitt 4,811 #99 Posted December 3, 2019 Our neighbour passed away peacefully early this morning. She had her family around her and her little dog Toby on her bed. So much better than dying in a hospital or care home. Thank you to everyone who commented and had joyce in their prayers. Best regards Mick
