Would we be ok if pre-race checks included torquing the lugs? Yup. A pre run torque check is a very good idea. I'going to guess that the race car hubs had a pilot that was a close fit to the center hole in the wheel. Looks like the go cart hubs do not. Without a pilot, the clearance between the studs and bolt holes leave a possibility for run out in the assembly. Probably won't notice it while driving around on grass, though.

It’s been quite a while, but I think they were just close tolerance on the studs, likely 1/2” instead of 7/16”. I recall if they got buggured up, they were a bear to pop off the studs. Pullstart 62,913 #53 Posted May 1, 2020 Tractors have been a shop priority lately... but this black kart has been right in the way in the shop. I finally counterbored (by eye instead of with an indicator or pilot of any kind) the lug nut holes with an end mill. I need to fix this bent wheel a bit then we can see how bad the gearing is.

Pullstart 62,913 #55 Posted May 1, 2020 This helped get the engine off the ground greatly! Hopefully we can spend less time cleaning tins out and more time cruising around!
Pullstart 62,913 #56 Posted May 1, 2020 For this kart, the next step is to eliminate the two uprights holding the steering wheel up, or move them in to create room for small person legs.
Pullstart 62,913 #57 Posted May 1, 2020 Uprights are cut and bent in quite a bit. I should be able to lower the steering column a few inches with little to no ill steering effects.
Pullstart 62,913 #58 Posted May 1, 2020 Narrowed and welded!
ebinmaine 67,633 #59 Posted May 1, 2020 I'm assuming that narrowification makes no difference to larger drivers?
Pullstart 62,913 #60 Posted May 1, 2020 I took a hot lap or three and it has no difference in control from what I remember. the brake band was glazed with steel bits or maybe chrome plating from the brake drum, that’s been cleaned up with some 80 grit. now I’m working on an easily removable pedal kit for little legs. 2

Pullstart 62,913 #62 Posted May 1, 2020 Linkage works too! I made the pedal have less throw and the best part is that I (a below average height adult) can still operate the forward control. Now to duplicate for the brake. I’ll likely build the linkage opposite so there is more brake throw for better control. The clutches in these like either full throttle or no throttle so that needs to operate quick. 3

Pullstart 62,913 #64 Posted May 1, 2020 Back in business! I need to work on gearing for acceleration but the kids are happy! 2

Pullstart 62,913 #67 Posted May 18, 2020 And the saga continues... the girls asked grandpa if they can ride the dirt bike that’s here still after they moved out 3 years ago. “Make sure you wear a helmet and you can get it running!” we have good spark, but the fuel system is in terrible shape! The carb is soaking in Berryman’s and is looking great... all but the needle valve is stick closed. I’ll keep working on that with them! 1
Achto 27,609 #68 Posted May 18, 2020 I think they have a case of being interested in any thing with wheels & an engine. There is a slight possibility that they got that from their parents. 2

Since the gym is closed, no better time to try the bike out!
SylvanLakeWH 25,600 #70 Posted May 18, 2020 Lucky man - Lucky kids!!! Is that a KX 80? Brings back some fun memories...Used to race the 100 cc MX class around Michigan from 1978 - 81... I was a Suzuki kid though...RM 100's...
Pullstart 62,913 #71 Posted May 18, 2020 I think it’s actually just a pit bike. 100 cc, automatic clutch. They will learn how to foot shift, balance, etc. if it works out, we’ll look for other bikes with clutches. 2

Sam Pasch 449 #74 Posted May 19, 2020 I don't see why it wouldn't. As long as its the same size rim.
