Burnerman 758 #1 Posted September 10, 2019 Why does my right hand axle hub always start working in towards the trans? I had a new double lock screw hub on it and it would loosen up. I’ve tried 2 different hubs. It’s only the right side.
ZXT 2,401 #2 Posted September 10, 2019 What kind of shape is the axle in? How is the woodruff keyway? If the axle is worn or the channel the woodruff key sits in loose, it could allow it to walk around. If all is good in that regard, i'd just tighten the set screws a bit more. If both sides are equally tight, both axles should behave the same. That is unless you turn right a lot more often than you do left.

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #6 Posted September 10, 2019 New set screws may help. A sharp cup point is necessary and they get rounded off. Have had luck torquing them down, drive a bit and retorque, drive more and retorque until you are satisfied they are staying tight. When you tighten the jamb nut don't tighten it too much - just snug. Any more and the nut tends to pull the setscrew back out. Do you have outside weights as well? Too much weight is hard on the setscrews if the clutch is let out too quick. Takes a lot of torque to get that weight turning. Garry
Ed Kennell 38,666 #7 Posted September 10, 2019 If the hub only has one set screw, drill and tap the hubs for a second screw 90 degrees from the original.
WHX?? 49,165 #8 Posted September 10, 2019 Check the condition of the keyways in the hub too. If they are wallowed out we will need to broach a new keyway in which I can do for you.

Garry I do have outer weights the total weight of each rear tire/wheel is around 88# each. I haven’t retorqued the set screws on either side. I'm Going to do that first I did have to cut the original hub off of that axle many years ago. I guess maybe I may have done something to it then. It never moves outward only closer to the trans. 1 hour ago, Ed Kennell said: If the hub only has one set screw, drill and tap the hubs for a second screw 90 degrees from the original. I had a 2 screw hub on it after I cut the original one off. I had that one creep in also but I did break off the 1 set screw because I think I overtightened the locknut. 🤭 I also saw on a FB page a guy who filed a slight cut in the woodruff key for the set screw to lock into. I may give that a shot and maybe drill a small dimple in the axle for the 90° screw. Im thinking, now, that I may have messed up that axle when I cut that old hub off. 😕

Burnerman 758 #11 Posted September 10, 2019 I think I just overtightened the jam nut. The set screw was just snug after I busted my knuckles loosening the nut.

That is why a new set screw is required for any hope of keeping it tight. Garry

WHX?? 49,165 #14 Posted September 11, 2019 Some guys say don't tighten the jam nut too tight as it can actually back the setscrew off. Now I don't know much about that but momma always said run double sets if working a horse!
