keitholdcar 17 #1 Posted September 5, 2019 What years were the electric clutches used? i have a 12 automatic that has one,and I know that tractor is a 73.It's been around here since new.I just bought a 14 automatic,it looks virtually identical, but the model number on the tag is unreadable at the moment.i gave the tag to a gunsmith friend,he thinks he can raise the number. Were those clutches in use for a number of years back then? ebinmaine 68,887 #2 Posted September 5, 2019 Seems to me they started around 1968 and were used for quite a number of years after that. Maybe all the way ....?
pfrederi 18,000 #3 Posted September 5, 2019 GT 14 and Electros used them. No names may have had them. By the time C series came out they were no longer in use.
SPINJIM 1,981 #4 Posted September 5, 2019 I have a 'no name' 16 Automatic with the electric clutch also, but I have seen 'no names' with the manual PTO. So maybe the automatics of that era had the electric clutch. Jim
Stepney 2,325 #5 Posted September 5, 2019 To my understanding the E clutches came about in 1968. Were used on various models up through the mid 70's. Never seen one on a blackhood. They came back again on the 315 models. I imagine it was due to the crank bearings on the new Command not being able to withstand the thrust of the engagement on a manual. This was the reason they had E clutches on the 800 Special with the B&S.
daveoman1966 3,762 #6 Posted September 6, 2019 Here is a pic of the two types of Electric PTO for use on horizontal shaft engines with either a 1" or 1 1/8" crankshaft. 1

keitholdcar 17 #9 Posted September 7, 2019 Thanks for the answers,I am going to have to see if my friend raised the serial and model numbers on the 14 automatic tractor.I would like to find the year of it.I think it got narrowed down by the pictures of the clutches.Mine have the raised ribs on the outside, not that flat plate so that makes it 73 and up.I know my 12 automatic is a 73,it was bought new in 73,and has all the paperwork from the sale, and has always been here since new.My only pictures of it are polaroids,so I will try to get some pictures taken with a real camera. The 73 was bought new to maintain the lawn of an old farm,(the land I'm on)and has always been inside. It has had nothing but Shell Rotella 15-40 oil in it,and was always started at an idle, never with the throttle raced up.It has always idled before shutting off too.The tractor had a Hobbs hour meter put on when new,and just hit 2900 hours this summer. The engine has never been apart, and is starting to use a little oil now.
