If the switch is heavy enough for the load a relay is not nessasary. Relay's are usually rated higher. Use a small load to close the relay switch, let the relay carry the heavy load. But --- I have a parasitic drain issue on one and just can't seem to hunt it down. Not necessary but I rather have the relay handle a constant load. Used to use relays in refrigeration equipment all the time. The thermostats would have these tinny contacts that were handling full compressor draw. And of course like everything else they are made cheaper now days. So after a few time where a stat would weld itself shut and ruin a cooler full of product we would wire a relay so when the stat closed it would just power the relay coil and the heavy contacts of the relay would handle compressor amps. Yes another item to fail and more cost but it was better than losing thousands of dollars of product. And we used good relays. No Dayton junk. I would firstly check all the Switches they handle the motors, sometimes water or moisture can result in a light current draw, also too old grease. even the one in the motors - if so. A motor itself must drain current to work. If there are endswitches included in the motors like a wipermotor has, i would suspect them as a possibility cause. lots of Metallic wear in such motors over the years combined with worn grease into such motors can become a greasy conductive mixture like a resistor. the more the metal wear into this mixture, the faster it enforces to scrap more metalfragments and the less the resistance of this mixture, so the higher a current can be. If now the resistance is low enough, you have your Current drain possible. same can happen also in old switch knobs , switches or also ignition switches, even the work via Starter solenoid. a fuse just can be exchanged sensefully with a fuse of the same rating and they shall never exceed their wires max.
