You should have a FEL for Colossus.

Thoughts ever cross your mind?

And this just in from the Maine Woods:

The completion date for Colossus, an alleged tractor build with fewer sightings than Big Foot, gets kicked out to 2027... 2028...??? Maybe longer if the tractors aren’t included in the next round of COVID vaccinations...

HAHAHAHAHAHHA

Literally. Just laughed right out loud. Well played sir.

@Oldskool

Yes sir it sure has occurred to us.

That was part of the reason I bought the loader frame from @JCM Jim to use as the strengthening subframe for this build.

BBT and I have conversed, constrapulated, and contrived on multiple occasions about the subject of having an FEL on a Wheelhorse.

We've also put a fair amount of connivance into the consideration of a light to medium duty forklift such as @BeninCT assembled  that may have some sort of a dumpy scoopy scrapey mechanism...

No physical progress today. Did measure the front for tie rods.

Tie rods will be 13" C to C.

Need to get on McMaster Carr and get some beastly ends coming my way.

You would have to build the fire under Eric to get him move any faster.

Tie rod ends came in from McMaster-Carr yesterday.

USA made.

7/16 for the inside. 1/2 for the outside.

Both greaseable.

These hex rods are 1-1/8".

Here's an old stick tie rod for comparison.

O. E. 5/8" diameter. 10.25 long.

Custom slightly larger HD version:

13" long. 7/16 inner, 1/2" outer ends.

Did some experimenting with the big drill press and a cross slide vise I picked up a year or 3 ago.

Never tried to mount the vise so that was interesting.

IMG_20210417_154029441.jpg.b2996b4a44e041c2301105b1135ccf39.jpg

Got that figured out and put one of the meaty hex rods in it.

Checked level/plumb 7 ways to everything.

Drilled a hole in one end of each rod and then tapped then for 7/16-20 thread. That's the smaller of the 2 rod sizes.

IMG_20210417_160637666.jpg.cbcb4e437df0d36299259697b39a40fb.jpg

Smooshed the drilled tie rod into the vise and ran a tap into it.

IMG_20210417_163609626.jpg.e09640e8f2fe430265d9ccac61040333.jpg

Used the nice fresh no idea how old this oil is cutting oil.

IMG_20210417_161945326.jpg.6491621e0c8e23c2923744b639626d27.jpg

What with the rod being so high out of the vise and the vise itself being... "Not expensive".... There's a tiny bit of off parallel from the rod to the rod end.

All told it was a great experience. Another tool for our home use.

Now I need to figure out how to clamp round material. If anyone has suggestions I'm all ears.
