Better used Greasy Pete's prosses and oil that down so it doesn't fall apart before you get to use it.

Eric pointed out a thread for me to check out. While doing so I noticed a Colossus notification.

I had to refresh my screen because I thought it was a glitch. Nope no glitch.

It was an actual notification.

So here I am wondering why you have a 90degree box. Lay it on us Eric. What up?

@Oldskool

To quote Eric in a conversation that we were having off the forum last week... 'bout the gear box...

"I've explored this a little bit during the Colossus build because I was thinking about turning the engine"

Uhhhhhhh...

I'm not exactly sure what Eric actually has there. :confusion-confused:

I only know what I researched after talking to Eric... and I found this... which looks similar to what Eric has...

@Snoopy11 Don are correct.

If'n you go waaaaaay back in this 70 page thread you'll see  I been thinkifying on which way to plop the powerplant down on this here rig.

I do like the traditional longitudinal way such as most Horses and I'm sure it would be fine. Mostly.  I'd settled on doing that even though the left side would have been SOME heavier.

Then.... @OldWorkHorse Steve and I were blabbering about tractors and such when he mentioned some gobbledygook about a gear box.

Now hold up a minute!!!!

Steve's fairly sure the above mentioned piece has a 4" pulley on one side and 5" on the other. We believe they could be swapped but obviously could be replaced to accommodate a friendly drive gear ratio.

So set the engine down with the rear facing the driver. Belt or chain direct to this box. This box would then be the connection to the clutch and transmission.

What size shafts does that have?

Should be either ½" or ¾".

I haven't decoded it yet. Should be a 20 HP rated box. My engine is 23 HP but will be dialed down in RPM along with me normally running about 70 to 80% throttle.

Rotation direction will need to be determined yet...

Have you seen a Peerless 700 series gearbox? About the same size. They were 90 degrees 3 4, or 5 speed with reverse. One of those coupled with the WH 8speed would be quite an animal with the correct pulley sizes. A gear ratio for every occasion, and then some.

I've seen on the YouTubes folks build other homemade tractors using a similar setup.

Interesting idea there.

It's a popular gearbox for sure. Alot of parts available for those.

Don

I’ve been enjoying my project for about maybe 4 or 5 years and I still haven’t done crap to it besides turn the exhaust ruined the steering and barely fixed it fun stuff but it doesn’t surprise me it’s been this long I specialize in three wheelers and snowmobiles atvs but I’m 13 this shouldn’t be surprising to any of you :D
