Stike 204 #1 Posted August 30, 2019 Hello All, Swaping a Kohler k321 from a c145 auto into a c161 8 speed with a blown k341 and need to switch pulleys. My question is what is the best tool and or technique to accomplish this without damaging anything? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Mike
Racinbob 11,370 #2 Posted August 30, 2019 There's 4 threaded holes in that pulley that you can run bolts in to easily rig up a very effective puller. 2
Racinbob 11,370 #3 Posted August 30, 2019 Another thought is to just leave the pulley on the 321. Isn't the only difference the diameter. A lot of guys put a hydro drive pulley on their 8 speeds.
Stike 204 #4 Posted August 30, 2019 Both those thoughts came to mind, if I can't get the pulleys off any idea how to figure out the new belt length?
Racinbob 11,370 #5 Posted August 30, 2019 I would probably get a belt 1" longer and 2" longer and try them out. Or maybe somebody here has done it and can tell you the length.
Stike 204 #6 Posted August 30, 2019 Looks like the pulley originally on the c161 is a 4 inch and the one off the c145 is a 5-1/4 inch so that should tell the story. For now both pulleys are soaking in liquid wrench and will make a puller in a day or so and try first. For now po got creative with wiring so plenty to do in the meantime. I have done the four bolt shuffle a time or two, make a plate with four holes and find bolts long enough to start into the pulley. Work your way around from bolt to bolt tightening until the pulley moves out from the block enough to get a regular three jaw puller on it (bolt holes in the pulley aren't too deep). Stike 204 #8 Posted August 30, 2019 Thanks for the replies, I was thinking a 1/2 inch plate drilled for threaded rod and nuts to pull past the key, but the best laid plans....
Stike 204 #9 Posted August 31, 2019 Made up this puller only needed to use 2 of the bolts and pulley came right off. Thanks for the help, now back to the hacked wiring harness may just rewire with all new.
953 nut 56,302 #10 Posted August 31, 2019 Great job on the puller! If you need some drawings or answers on your wiring we are here for you. May want to start a new post so others can use it as a reference in the future.
Burnerman 759 #11 Posted September 1, 2019 (edited) I thought the one on my sons junkyard find was going to be tough but it came right off with my puller very easily. Nice work!👍 Edited September 1, 2019 by Burnerman
