Kohler K301 - not running right after governor arm removal

Hello Everyone! Happy Sunday! 

 

I picked up a project pony that I have been playing with. Today I had to take the governor arm off to gain access to the governor stop pin. When I put it back on I followed some instructions that I found here. (shaft counter clock wise, arm away from carb, tighten bolts) When I start the machine she runs FAST, I am just assuming that because I had the governor arm off that i put it back on incorrectly, but it sounds like it could also be carb related. I made a video to help explain my predicament - any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did you hold the carburetor throttle at the wide open position when you tightened the clamp on the governor arm? A third hand is required but an elastic band will work.

The clamp needs to be tighter than expected because when operating the governor force is quite high and the shaft can spin in the clamp. The arm will collapse at the shaft but you still seem to have space between the two halves of the clamp. When the space at the bolt disappears you need to open it back up so it is clamped tight.

I don't think that you have a carb issue.

 

I use that same trick for setting the governor by myself. Loosen the gov arm so that it is free on the shaft. Lightly clamp a Vise Grip on to the shaft at about the 9 o'clock position so that the weight of Vise Grip will hold the shaft full counter clock wise. When you place a wrench on the crimp bolt, use it to hold the arm so that the throttle is fully open and then tighten down the nut on the crimp bolt.

 

Also check the spring location on the gov arm, make sure it is in the same hole that it was in before. I saw that when you moved the throttle that the spring would hang loose, I don't think that this should happen. I believe that there should be some spring tension all of the time. One of the holes in the gov arm should show a little wear, this would most likely be where the spring was placed before.

When I adjust mine, I keep the gorvernor arm bolt just snug, make my adjustment by holding the throttle wide open and turning the shaft ccw as well.  The governor arm will move on the shaft by force, but not freely.  It helps to keep it all aligned while I tighten the bolt back up. The he first few times I did it, it took me a try or two before I was satisfied with the results.  Keep at it and you’ll get it!

Hey All, 

 

Thank you for the help, I made two adjustments that got me closer. 

 

1. I moved the spring like you all suggested. It was actually keeping the carb from returning to "idle" 

2. I noticed the throttle cable was janky. It "idle" was set to about Midway on the carb. 

 

We are getting closer! I will play with it tomorrow and maybe make another video.

Hey All, 

 

Getting closer, I got the low end (Idle) pretty darn close I think, but it still seems like its running fast on anything other that idle.  Does anyone have a break down of the RPM range on this motor? 

 

Here is a video of where I am at - does it sound fast to you as well?
