Axle and transmission info pls

My 312 I understand is equipped with a fragile Eaton transaxle.  My tractor does NOT have hydro deck lift.  My old GT1800 which I plan to salvage parts from has the more stout 1100 hydro setup with the hydro lift.  Can it be made to work in the smaller 312 tractor with minimal hacking?

While im here, I’m also wondering if the larger front wheels on my GT will fit on the front axle of the 312 or if I would have to swap the whole axle...

I will defer to the Eaton guys (I am a sundstrand guy) on the hydro swap.  As to front wheels you can swap them however the front of the tractor will sit a bit higher not a big deal but if you use it for mowing you may have some issues with getting the deck level.  You can take the front spindles off your donor and use them.

Should not be any hacking at all. I switched a 516 over and all bolt on stuff.

Other than wanting the hydro lift, if that 700 transmission is running it can last a long time. My daughters machine has well over a thousand hours on it and is still mowing grass.

It is pretty nice to have a complete donor machine. Would it be better / easier to swap the engine to the GT?

There have been several post on swapping an Eaton 1100 in place of a 700.

I actually don’t really care about the hydro lift, I just plan to push snow and want this thing reliable.

I suppose the 700 is perceived as a week link, but in dealing with the age of the machines you can be never sure.

I looked back though some project pics and found the only difference is in the hydro control lever arrangement. No big deal just one is on of the pivot the other on the right but hooks right up.

If your not using the hydro lift, you will have to take one of the hoses from the valve bank and run it to the pump to eliminate the hydro valve.

The rest should be the same, bolt it up, hook up the brake, use the same belt, adjust and let r eat.

Now, on to my next question- Was it possible to lock the rear axle on any Wheel Horse tractors, be they hydro or gear?  I see this as a major limiting factor in plowing snow, cultivating, etc.

There was no 'Locking ".  Some pullers weld up the differential but you do not have much luck trying to turn corners:P

Chains and weights  get things done.

The 10 pinion differentials used in Raiders/Chargers were limited slip but not locking. My snow horses (plows and Blowers) are all Chargers because of that advantage.

If you have wheel weights, liquid filled tires and chains you will be amazed what a :wh: can do.

Yep, I think I may have used one on an 1100 series, just flipped it over.

For some reason I forgot I made this thread.  Looking forward to moving on this.  I’ve decided I would like the hydro lift to work on this as I can see how during snow pushing it can get tiring having to use the handle.

Good running 1984 GT-1800 with solid, quiet and smooth 48 inch deck. Original condition. Hydraulic lift works correctly. Great tractor. Pick up in Kasson, MN. Cash at pick up.

      Working on:  1986 Wheel Horse 312-A, Model 21-12KE02, 42" Deck Model 05-42MR04

      Hello All,

Well, the parking brake on this one stopped working, and after removing the shift plate it was clear that the pawl was no longer reaching any of the teeth on the bell crank. So I figured I needed to adjust the travel on the rod that accentuates the squeeze on the brake lining. It's not perfectly clear to me where the adjust point is, but I think it is the bolt-nut-spring assembly as shown on the pictures attached. Now, if that is the bolt I need to put some clockwise turns on to get this done, the question becomes how can I get a pair of 9/16" wrenches or sockets in there to make the turns. I pretzeled myself in several ways to get tools on both ends many ways with no luck. All comments very much appreciated.

      I'm using these diagrams:
      www.partstree.com/models/21-12ke01-312-a-toro-garden-tractor-1986/index.html

The first picture is taken from the right side inward toward the assembly. The second is taken with me on my back looking up.

I have replaced key switch relay and solenoid and get nothing. I found oil safety switch was bad so I jumped it I check oil always befoRe starting. Since I have done this I get relay the relay to click. It will start by jumping lugs on solenoid and cut off by key. I also found someone already had jump neutral switch out and I know seat switch works.could starting side of pto switch be bad and how can I check.

      Good Saturday Morning,

I am new to this forum; my tractor is the Work Horse GT-1800, the B&S V-Twin variant of the Wheel Horse line. Has an Eaton 11 tranny. I have been having braking issues for some time; pressing the brake pedal does put the transmission into neutral, but holding power has been a problem. I took off the side panel to check for an adjustment of the brake rod, only to find a PO had replaced the spring (called "heavy spring" in the manual) with thick washers, which gives me no way to fine tune this brake. The spring is listed in the Eaton schematics as "Item 11, spring" but no real part number. Can anyone suggest a parts source and part numbers for these units?

Up next on restoration list is a 1986 Wheel Horse 312-A. This will be a bottom up restoration, with a bit of customization as well. Here's where I am starting.
A couple of things I've decided already: 1) I like the K motors better than the Magnum's, so the K motor is staying. It'll be rebuilt before going back on the machine. 2) Paint will be a custom paint job. I will once again try my hand at HVLP instead of my normal rattle cans. God help me! 3) Along w2ith the custom paint, the decals will also be a custom set. 4) The deck will probably be changed to a 42" RD instead of the SD that is on it. I'm sure I'll think of more things to change, but at the moment that's it.
@Vinylguy Terry, I'll be in touch soon to discuss.
      Stay tuned...
