Thanks @Pullstart

I was'nt aware of the hubs being 4 lug. Are those heavier duty than the standard 5 lug WH hubs? I'll take a look at the YT when I get back to our apartment. Typing this while at the restaurant with the GF

The 4 lug hubs are BEASTS compared to the 5 lug flavor.  Why less holes and more strength?  I’m not sure.  They have much longer keyways, heavier castings, thicker flanges, etc.

Oooo taking a risk. Unless at my wife's request (or while she is away from the table), mobile at the table is not appreciated!

@Pullstart are the 5 lug hubs a direct bolt on or did you buy/get/make some to fit?

Assuming the axles on the big wheel models are also beefier?

They are still 1-1/8” axles, same width and height keyway… so direct swap.  The 4 lug axle shafts have an RX keyway if I recall… they are a deep half moon and about 2” long.

Quite the difference. Do you think the difference in hubs has something to do with the availability in wheels/rims and tyres back in the day?

I think it is a mater of physics. Larger diameter tires will subject the hub and axle to more forces when they are cornering or have side force applied to them.

@sjoemie himself lug bolt comparison too.  Big one = 4 lug.

Heavier hardware makes sense, 4 studs to transfer power or at least clamping force instead of 5 means more stress per bolt.

Also the forces on the hubs are greater with larger wheels for sure.

Funny thing though.. on cars.. older and lighter(!) cars have 4 studs and the newer and thus heavier cars have 5 studs. Well around here anyway. To make it easier (not) the stud patterns differ between cars.. obviously :P

5 big wheels, in various forms or stages.  One with melted wiring, one runner, one in need of an engine, one full project and one in the middle of nap time.  @953 nut thanks again for turning on my big wheel switch!

Got a 953 and 414-8 from Big Red Fred the other day. Got a great deal on both of them. Both run great and I am very pleased with them. Got the 414 for my grandpa and the 953 was just to good of a deal to pass up, so now I got another tractor in my collection

I wanted to show off my 953 i bought last year from the original owners son. I am very proud to own this piece of great american engineering. It was bought local in kendallville indiana the building is still standing where this tractor was sold. I got the greatest deal on it. It came with a snow blade, snow blower and a mower deck. i have since sold the snow blower because it was for a much newer horse. i am an originalist. This tractor i was told has only had an axle seal fixed and his dad many years ago slapped a new coat of paint on it. that is it never been rebuilt or anything else. It is one of my prizes horses.

Boys, having problems with the front wheel alignment on my 1054a.  Seems as tho the tie rod is about 1/2" or so too short causing the front tires to pigeon toe.  Tore everything apart can find nothing wrong or bent.  According to WH parts diagrams, the 953 and 1054 tie rods are the same part number.  Perhaps one of you good fellas could give me the measurements of your tie rods so I can verify mines the correct length?  Maybe something else Im missing here?

      Thanks,
      Mike
