XLT 13 #1 Posted August 23, 2019 I don't see a snap ring, but my puller isn't working... Is there supposed to be a snap ring on the brake drum?
ebinmaine 68,391 #2 Posted August 23, 2019 (edited) Was there a bolt in the end of the drum shaft? If so there shouldn't be a snap ring that I'm aware of. No bolt? Yes ring... Edited August 23, 2019 by ebinmaine Added correction
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #3 Posted August 23, 2019 Item 42 is a retaining ring shown at the end of 207 brake shaft. Garry

Does the drum move even the least bit on the shaft? Or is it completely Frozen in place?
953 nut 55,812 #6 Posted August 23, 2019 Could be the snap ring is gone, but there is enough rust build up to prevent it from coming off. Tap on the drum to get it onto the shaft as far as it will go then file off the rust accumulation as best you can.
XLT 13 #7 Posted August 23, 2019 Doesn't seem to move at all... and I have been trying a 3 jaw puller on it... Been soaking it in PB blaster...
953 nut 55,812 #8 Posted August 23, 2019 A ball joint pickle fork may get ti moving for you. You can probably borrow or rent one at some of the auto parts stores. I have done this on a few with good results.
ebinmaine 68,391 #9 Posted August 23, 2019 If you have access to it, lots of heat will be your friend as well. I'm a ruffle some feathers with this and I don't mean to but I am not a fan of PB blaster. Good old-fashioned $6 a can Liquid Wrench has been very very successful with me but there are also some other ones such as Kroil and I haven't tried it but Richard likes paraffin wax from a candle. To free that thing up you may be able to take a small punch and punch in circles around the outside of where the drum is on the shaft.
The Tuul Crib 7,337 #10 Posted August 23, 2019 I use a product called nut buster. Its made by beaver products. Works really good for me.
stevasaurus 22,868 #11 Posted August 23, 2019 Sounds like you got the drum off, if you are now trying to separate the case halves.

New to me, I've got a half dozen different brands that have been recomended on here but never heard of "Nut Buster". 8 minutes ago, stevasaurus said: Sounds like you got the drum off, if you are now trying to separate the case halves. Think he is still fighting that and the part of the shift lever that is inside too.

I’m a fan of wax too, I works great on rusted snow plow bolts on my plow truck I’ve been using that trick for many moons!
The Tuul Crib 7,337 #17 Posted August 23, 2019 OK I was a little wrong on that pronunciation of the product it's called bolt buster. Here is a picture of the can .

953 nut 55,812 #20 Posted August 24, 2019 Penetrating oil soak, small cold chisel at the base of the key and it should roll out.
ebinmaine 68,391 #21 Posted August 24, 2019 I've been able to convince a round bottomed key to move by using a hammer and small punch or chisel to hit the ends and make it rock back and forth some. Then do as Richard said just above.
Pullstart 63,096 #22 Posted August 24, 2019 Caveman tactics have been working for a looooong time! If it ain’t broke, get a bigger hammer!
XLT 13 #23 Posted August 24, 2019 Concerned it will shear off flush with the axle and then I'll have a bigger problem. Will keep soaking it..
