Recommended Posts

XLT

1961 model 701 I took the transmission out to replace the shifter and unbolted the whole thing but I cannot separate the haves. Any hints or tricks?

The ones I've done I very gently take a wood chisel that is maybe 1.5 in wide and tap it against the gasket all the way around the case. on the second revolution you can start to see things separating a bit.

Be gentle. Be gentle. Be gentle. You'll get the feel for it.

I started mine with a sharp, stiff putty knife.  Danny

Got it separated about 3/4".

Doesn't seem to want to separate any further.

Of course, it's dry as a bone in their looks like it hasn't seen or oil since the 70s.

The remnant of a broken shift Rod is sticking down in there rusted stiff. And one of the shifter rails that seems to be stuck down nothing moving

Any further ideas?

This is where you will want penetrating oil and lots of patience.

Look and see wherever it's still attached. Oil that.

Tap it back together a little.

Oil again.

Separate a little.

Repeat as needed.....

I've used the wood chisel as mentioned. Works well but you've got yours past that point. It sounds to me like it's hanging up on one of the shafts. Push the case halves back together and clean all the shafts well. Use emery paper to get rid of the burrs, rust etc. :)

After cleaning up the shafts and lubricating everything you may want to cut four hardwood wedges and tap one into each corner. Go around the transmission case from corner to corner tapping the wedges in to gently pry them apart.

Sounds like the guys have got you covered ... Here's a transmission manual in case you don't have one.

Thanks for the

help, guys. I tried the hardwood wedges and they did get it a little further separated. I'll keep at it.

Part of the issue, and I'm not sure is that the shifter was broken off and what remains is frozen pretty badly... does this transmission need to be in neutral to separate the halves? Because it's not... and nothing in that region seems to be moving right now to get it into neutral.

I ask because that's a step in the manual, but that's for complete disassembly, which may not be necessary for this.

You may want to lay it on one side and squirt a lot of penetrating oil on each shaft, then roll it over the next day and do the same thing. parts that have been dry that long could be rusted in place.

The portion of the shift lever that is in the shift forks will hold tight to the fork it is in. If need be you may want to drill down through what is left of the lever to free it from the ball. Start small and work your way out to 3/8" That should let the internal part of the shift lever to fall out of the fork.

I may have it far enough apart to get a reciprocating saw on that piece... but that might be the 100lb. hammer approach...

as long as you're careful not to nick anything else I don't see an issue using a reciprocating saw to get that shaft piece out of there

Would that chunk of shifter, stuck in one gear or another, keep the case from fully separating?

if it's that dry, bolt it back together and fill it with kerosene and let it sit for a week or 2

It shouldn't ....my guess is one of the shift rails is binding or the 1533 bearings don't know if they want to stay in the case half or on the axle shaft.

Jabelman has  a good idea. I have used the acetone and ATF mixture  like that with good results. Actually made parts easier to clean once apart as well.

One rail is def. engaged is definitely stuck in its position. I'll take some pics later... unfortunately, have to work in between tractor sessions and bee removals.

There is nothing in the case that will keep you from separating it.  Make sure you are taking off the larger case half and leaving the shallow side.  Like Bob said, you probably have some varnish or burrs that are holding you up.  Emory cloth or a file for burrs will do the trick.  The key ways could have burrs also.  :occasion-xmas:

Pullstart

What if you rotate input shaft and axles while you tap on the case?  It shouldn’t matter if it’s in gear or not when you pull it apart, the shafts just drop in to the bushings/bearings of the case once it’s all clean.
