Deck Height Adjustment & Latch

Recommended Posts

Hopefully just one final issue with my deck conversion.  Just to recap; I took a deck (05-36XR01) from a vertical shaft tractor and used the lift hardware along with the rear height adjusting quadrant from another deck (75-36MS01).  The tractor I am trying to use it with is a Work Horse 1971-72 that originally had a deck like (2-4300) that used the single wide center lift frame.  I have mounted the mower to the tractor BUT when trying to lift the mower to the stow position the latch handle hits the mower and cannot get close to lock the handle.  It looks like the latch handle is much longer than the newer tractors (see picture you can see where the latch hits the deck and how long the latch is).  My questions are;  has anyone run into this before?  Is the latch handle simply too long or am I doing something wrong.....or both???

Thanks!

The latch lever is shorter on the newer mid mounts...about 1/2 that length.

The other difference I notice is your deck is further forward.    The swinging cross bar is normally nearly vertical when the forked tab is hooked on the correct rod.  Yours is slanted to the rear which pushes the deck forward.

I had this happen to me. Can't remember when or which deck. I just cut a bit off the latch.

And as Ed says, the cross bar should be vertical.

The C-Series has swinging deck lift that hold the deck in place. It has a bar the fits in the slotted hole in front where you have the lift chain attached.  I don't know how you can fix that. If you move the lift chain forward it may work.. Your tractor does not have the hole in the frame for this bracket. They designed it for a blind hole on the right side of the frame with a larger hole with a bushing on the left and it attached by a c-clip on the shaft.

Thanks, I did notice the length latch lever and the angle of the swinging cross bar in the manuals for newer tractors but was not sure if the swinging cross bar needed to be vertical or not.  I put the forked tab on the only rod that is available.  Did not want to start cutting until I had some expert opinions from the group.  So if I shorten the latch lever do you think I can place the fork to the front of the rod? Or try it as it is?  I replaced the drive belt with the same size as I used with the old mower and it fits just right.  I would need a longer belt if the deck is further back.  Not a big problem just wondering what others experience has been.  Thanks for the help!

If shortening the latch lever allows it to lift, I would leave the deck where it is and use your existing belt.

Thanks Ed, I'll give it a go.  I think it will work.  When I try and lift the deck now, the bumpers come up against the foot rests and the front comes up but hits the latch lever before the handle can lock (by a fair amount).  I'll trim it down by roughly half and give it a go.
