Missing Serial number plate - Model?

Recommended Posts

Steph

My husband and I recently purchased a Wheelhorse to restore.  But, upon getting the tractor home and doing some more research we are unsure if the model stick on the tractor is correct.  Unfortunately, the serial number plate is MIA.  The stick on the tractor says 605, but it has an electic start.  How can we determine what the exact model of the tractor is?  We did get the unit running (with my husband's ingenuity) since we are looking for a fuel pump.  Any input is greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance!!!!

photos if you can upload will help out alot. but if it is a 605 here are some things to get you in the right direction. not everything is correct all the time on tractor data but it is the best place to get a general idea of what you have. but with photos these folks are the best place for your information you need. Here is the tractor data link for a 605! http://www.tractordata.com/lawn-tractors/000/3/1/314-wheel-horse-605.html

in your fuel pump want ad you mentioned you had a k181 so you have an 8 horse Kohler.

Sounds like what you have there could be referred to as an 855.

In nearly 55 years there's no telling what any number of previous owners would have done to your tractor. Maybe you have an original 855 with a changed belt guard and maybe it's the other way around.

Either way you've got a great little piece of machinery and American history

Please do take a moment to go into the Introduction Section and post a few pics of your tractor. We all LOVE pics.

You have a 1965 model 605 according to the belt guard, but a 605 would have come with a Tecumseh 6 HP pull start engine. The engine may have been changed or the belt guard, who knows. There should be a model number plate under the dash board. Take a look to see if it is there.

Pullstart

I have a couple Tecky powered tractors, they have provisions for pull OR electric start.  Did the 60x models have no starter, or did the 65x models not originally come with a recoil too, or were there exceptions along the way no matter what?

Kevin I'm kind of under the impression that the 6 0 x was pull start only.

The 6 5x was electric start but also had a recoil.

Trina's 657 Tecumseh is a battery-operated electric start with a recoil s well. To the best of anyone's knowledge and by the Numbers matching, that should be original.

953 nut

605 and 655 left the factory with engines that had different spec numbers. I would presume the electric starter and charging system would be the reason.

I believe the engine information is:

Kohler K181S

Serial# B223001

Spec# 30108D

953 nut

That would be correct for the 1966 model 856.
