I got myself a doe last weekend.  Lots of sits lately with no movement.  I’m happy to have another one for the freezer!

Good. We haven't seen much since Monday.

Tuesday I got in the stand just after day light, turned and sat, and there was a 4-pt in front of me across the way. Even if it had been legal I never had the shot, never got to see anything but the head.

Then Weds morning I put the wife in the spot I shot from Monday, and she saw one, but never saw the head, said it was facing away from her the whole time.

Yesterday was too windy and we didn't stay long, this morning was even worse, so we went and got 6 of the legs I had at dad's house and butchered them. I'm going to take my son out for an hour or two when he gets home from school. Hopefully we see something close enough to shoot since he is allowed to take anything.

Bambi grew up big and buck.

But we went to a local dive bar on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to see a band and some lady kicked at me because I looked like I’d shoot Bambi.  Yup.  She wasn’t wrong. I’d shoot Bambi.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

No more deers for the season were harvested at Pullstart Stables, but it’s rabbit season until March 31!  I might say I enjoy rabbits and hunting them more than deer!  Last summer, my favorite small game gun, my Savage left hand bolt action .17 HMR might have blown up in my face.  The local gun dealer thinks it was the load.  I favor on I could have maintained it better.  Either way, yesterday I nabbed a new Ruger 10/22 off the shelf.  Once home, I went out looking for fresh tracks in the snow.  It took me a few shots to find center but found me a hare in the path!

I must admit, part of learning the new gun was remembering that it’s semi auto.  I shot, missed, then pulled the lever back to reload.  I then jammed it, had to clear the action, and start over.  :hide:

10/22's are one of the best guns out there IMHO...

I have the bolt action precision model. I like bolts. Less likely to jam and I think more accurate... :twocents-twocents:

If you really want to love it, put a Volquartson trigger in it!

Mine breaks around 2lbs now.

From the sign I seen and killing over a hundred deer in my life I would have bet the farm that deer wasn't mortality hit. You should be very proud recovering that deer!!  I always keep tracking as long as I have blood and would have stayed with it like you did but thinking back I don't think I have ever found one with that little blood. She must of been full of blood, gut must have  plugged the exit wound. The only thing I would have done is not push her right a way with the lack of blood, I know the risk of a coyote getting her, leaving over night is high, from experience it's higher if pushed.

Recovery of that deer is something to be proud of, great job!!

Wifey says "If it tastes like chicken why don't you eat chicken?" She likes bunny's, but I do too in a different form. :P

Lucky.

I've seen one rabbit this year, so far, and it was not worth shooting at.

I don't get to hunt in January at all. Too many other things tying up those couple weekends.

Being at home most days, “hunting” rabbits consists of me holding onto my gun and taking a hot lap around the house and barns for 20 minutes.  Add another 8-10 if I get anything and need to field dress it.

I managed to pop two the other day.  So far, that’s 4 from my little property here where they roam.  I still see just as many fresh tracks, poo, and bushes torn up at the bases.

I’ve got an exciting feature “growing” in the field!  There is a massive ground clearing project a few miles down the road.  I saw them hauling these stumps out of the property and decided to go ask where they were going.  Ends up they were dumping them in a gravel pit less than a mile away.  My guess is they were being charged by the load.  I offered my field for wildlife shelter and improvements and they jumped right on it!  Free/free = win/win!  When this grass strip between this plot and the trail gets filled up, we’ll find another spot to add a wind block and rabbit hut to.

Great work improving the wildlife habitat.    Maybe it's time to add another feature to your rabbit hunting.  If I were still in the business, you would get a couple of these.

My bunnies aren't that big. Maybe about the size of a squirrel. Our Greys are pretty big though.  New England Cottontails are pretty small compared to other rabbits.

@Ed Kennellyou will have to give me some tips to get my two morons into shape.

I had one staring right at a rabbit and not know what to do about it back in November.

In my grade school years, I had a pet beagle and about once a week he would bring me a gift--a rabbit or a squirrel he’d run down and captured. Musta been genetic since we got him as a puppy and never trained him for that.
