Difference between early and later wheelhorse 5003-5010 transmission

What is the difference between the two transmission and how can I differentiate before 

taking apart?

The difference between the 5003 and 5010 is the tab that the brake band bolts to. It's vertical on the 5003 and at about a 45° angle on the 5010. Also the 5003's and the early 5010's had ball bearings on the brake shaft and later 5010's had needle bearings. :)

If you really want to know everything about those 2 transmissions, I suggest paging through this thread.  It has everything you ever wanted to know about the #5003 and the #5010 transmissions.  Excellent information and lot of it in this thread.  :occasion-xmas:  Bob is right though...it is the brake band mount that is used to identify those trannys from the outside.
