Kohler K301 47460

Hello Everyone!

I saved another pony to bring to the stable today. I picked up a raider 12 with the kohler k301. I does have an oil leak, and i think I identified it, but I don't know that this part is, or how to replace it. I think it might be part of the governor, part # 231355S. It is the shinny shaft rod behind the governor/throttle plate, it has a phillips head.

Any ideas? I tried searching, but not knowing the part I had a hard time searching.

That’s part of the governor shaft. If it’s leaking where the shaft goes through the bronze bushing. There’s no seal there. Sometimes if an engine has too much leakage past the rings ( blow you). It will pressurize the crankcase some sand cause oil to leak there.

Have you checked the breather to see if it's clean and clear?

Thanks, I looked at a few exploded parts diagrams, why does it have a phillips head on it? is it for adjustment or is there something it needs to screw into?

I have not! Is it near the flywheel?

The breather is in the cover of your valve train, between the fuel pump and carburetor.20160207_130105.thumb.jpg.62e2535114e9ef.

Is this the pin you are describing?

Thanks Guys did some research today, and asked around. I guess its a governor stop shaft, or governor cross shaft. It keeps the governor in place.

I am going to try and tear into this weekend and let you know what i find out. Ill try and take pictures to share.

Alright everyone,

I got a new pin in, pulled the governor linkage off, Went to install the new PIN, only to find that the threads are stripped inside the block. So I have 2 questions,

1. What exactly does this governor stop shaft do, is it necessary? (I would assume yes)

2.  This is a budget pony job, so since the threads inside the block are stripped out, would you rather...

     a. JB Weld the Stop pin and hope for the best.

     b. Tap the hole and Put a bolt in

     c. Maybe doing something like a helicoil?

Any help would be great. I am not 100% sure what this thing does.

Yes It keeps the governor gear with the flyweights on it from coming off the shaft its mounted on and yes that has to be there. Well not really unless you want to chance the gear coming off and flying around the crankcase.  That would put an end to your budget pony job real quick.

Helicoil would be the right fix which is what I would do.  You could try JB welding it in if you can get what's left of the threads clean enough  for it to grab on to. May or may not work but not for lack of trying...  monitoring it would be a must.

I sometimes do a o-ring or rtv  behind the head if the copper washer is questionable.

Baffles me how someone could have stripped it out in the first place?

Thank you. I'd like to do it right with the helicoil, but how would the pin fit back in then? wouldn't I have to upsize the pin?

No just the opposite, you drill the hole larger. Use the specified drill and tap for the size helicoil you need. Then the original size pin goes back in. Not sure what the thread size is on the pin ...5/16 -18? Someone help me out here.

Can be a tricky procedure without the motor disassembled but doable. Getting metal shavings in the motor is always a concern as this is not a blind hole. Pressurizing the crankcase with compressed air might help?

Thank you for the help, I took the governor arm off so that i could get to the PIN, and it was super drilled out, almost like someone had attempted to do the same before me. I ended up JB welding and I think we should be "ok" for a little bit.
