CountryRock 199 #1 Posted August 10, 2019 (edited) This Post Will Be Updated Regularly As I Work On The Tractor Brought this 416H home for service and much needed TLC. Belongs to a local game club I'm a member of. It runs well, but hasn't been looked after properly. Needs pretty much everything serviced and a good cleaning. It's equipped with a 42 inch recycler deck. I really like this tractor and I may try to buy it from the club as they have a newer cub cadet that they use more. peter lena 8,580 #3 Posted August 10, 2019 that deck is screaming for a total scrape down and oil soak left in the sun upside down to soak in the oil to the metal, let the deck get hot and it will turn black from the lubrication soak. i do mine 3 times a year , zero rot , let it soak in oil upside down over winter , it will save the deck. that spindle is not difficult , i just rebuilt two 42 " r/d decks, all new bearings and seals , also replaced idler pulleys , they were major noise cause. i hope you manage to talk the club into a sale, great timing with the new plastic cub on board, looks like collective neglect on that horse, every time i see one like that i just want to save it, i hope you get it, love to help out with any ideas to bring it back, pete Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

JoeM 7,871 #14 Posted August 13, 2019 There is a pretty good chance that one will have issues. Tins, just time consuming. One thing I use when I don't want to remove much, is a slightly bent air nozzle tube. I remove the fly wheel screen covers and work it around various places. CountryRock 199 #15 Posted August 15, 2019 Spent just shy of $120 on parts today. Ordered Rotary belts, Wix engine and hydro filters and a Toro fuel filter. CountryRock 199 #16 Posted August 17, 2019 (edited) Majority of the parts should be showing up today in the mail. Went to a local shop that recently closed and got some NOS blade kits. One for the 42" deck and one for the 36" deck for another tractor I have. The blades for the 36" are in original Wheel Horse packaging. I'm gonna save that box just because of that. Spent a little time shooting the breeze about wheel horses with the kid that's selling the shop contents off. He's got a lot of neat stuff in that place, and I invited him to join up here as well. CountryRock 199 #19 Posted August 18, 2019 (edited) Warning: The following post shows Horse Abuse!! I pulled the seat and fender pan off the 416H today and was absolutely horrified at what I saw. Grass and dirt was caked all over everything, up to 2 inches thick in some spots. I began with a plastic scraper and shop vac but quickly needed to go to long screwdrivers and compressed air. I worked at it for about an hour and a half and did as much cleaning as I could before the storms started rolling in. I'm gonna have to take the fuel tank out and take the wheels off to clean it thoroughly before I can even change the hydro oil. Another issue I'm having now is the engine is surging, which began last week when I idled it down fairly quickly from high rpm and shut it off. I'm thinking maybe the governor went a little wonky but I'm not sure. One thing I do know is that I gotta try really hard to make this tractor mine. CountryRock 199 #20 Posted August 26, 2019 Busy day working on this tractor today. I pulled the wheels, gas tank and cooling fan off and finished cleaning the transaxle. The fan was covered in dirt and grass so I cleaned that up with a plastic scraper and then a simple green bath. Dumped the old gas and my dad cleaned the outside of the gas tank up while I scrubbed the wheels. Changed the hydro filter, ran new fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump, put the tank back in and wheels back on and then I drained the hydro transaxle. Filled that back up with Mobil 1 10w-30 high mileage. While I was waiting on the oil to work into the transaxle, I changed the fuel line on the outlet side of the pump and put a new fuel filter in, then I changed the trans drive belt. Buttoned everything back up and cranked it up. Fuel filter filled right up, before it barely got any fuel in it. Still need to change the impulse line and the line from the filter to the carb. Engine runs much better now, still a slight surge, but I think changing the rest of the lines and tweaking the carb a little should fix that. Now I can pull all the engine tins off and get that all cleaned up. 3 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

CountryRock 199 #23 Posted September 1, 2019 (edited) Didn't take much for pics today, but I finished changing the fuel line and impulse line and cleaned a bunch of dirt out from the engine block. What a pain to get the blower shroud off this engine. Whoever designed it should be beaten with a 2x4. I don't know why they thought removing throttle linkages and the coil should be required to take a shroud off! Struggled with getting the shroud back on until just after dark. Had to stop for the night before something got smashed in anger. Anyway I think the breather tube that goes into the air cleaner looks a little mangled, may replace that. Also gonna check all the electrical connections and apply dieelectric grease where needed. Gotta drop the oil yet too. Those screws around the carburetor should have blue thread locker because if they come out the engine is "screwed." Yes, that hose is spent. The one in the Onan parts manual is different than what toro shows and the toro one looks to be discontinued.
