Pull the handle up which is connected to the idler pulley and route the top part of the belt loop under the idler pulley. Then when you release the handle it will push the pulley down on the outside of the belt

The bottom part of the belt loop is always the drive side on a Wheel Horse. That part of the belt is always direct because it handles all of the load. All tension pulleys and such always go to the slack side (upper loop) of the belt loop

As John said, your belt installation should look like this when completed.

Glad you found us! Don’t be a stranger around here.  Lots of help to answer any questions you may have while working on or with your 417.  You made a good decision in a tractor and if you take care of it, it will last you guys for decades!  Good luck!

953 NUT, perfect reference picture, to those that have an issue, note that the top side of the belt is driven against the flat side of the pulley, while the lower   V  side  rides in the v grove of the larger drive pulley. as simple as it sounds , people get confused by it, this picture should be a quick reference to a belt mount question, good response, pete

Someone also pointed out during my Frank build that it should spin the pulley in a direction as to tighten the bolt, if it were ever loose.  Clockwise rotation of a tensioner is proper... I now know that and corrected what I had done wrong. :handgestures-thumbupright:
