Shortcircuit hydro trans leak

Recommended Posts

Shortcircuit

New on here I have Charger 12 with hydrostatic transmission.  Numbers are not readily available as of this post. Problem is hitch on back has worn the seam of the transmission to the point of leaking. What can be done? Thanks in advance.

Hitch probably didn't cause the oil leakage. Most likely gasket failure. If that is the answer, well it will involve splitting the case. Not what you want to hear but without photos hard to say otherwise.

While the hitch pin hole may be worn, the "seam" between the 2 transmission halves is a somewhat thick piece of metal.  There is a gasket between these two halves that "seals" them together.  To replace that gasket the transmission has to be split in half.

However, have you cleaned the transmission top to bottom, then ran the tractor a while, stopping frequently to double check where the leak is coming from.  The hitch pin area is a low point and you want to make sure oil isn't seeping from another area, flowing down the split joint and then dripping off the bottom of the hitch pin like its leaking there.

I am pretty sure it is coming from the seam. The metal is worn flat as compared to rest of seem. Its not the hitch pin its self, it's the flat part of hitch that goes under transmission. What a great bunch of people on here to answer so so quickly. Did not expect that. (WOW) I will check further

Your Charger has a Sundstrand hydro transmission, this manual may help answer some questions. As Jim said, the fluid (probably Dexron ATF) is very thin and can be coming from anywhere showing up at the lowest point. Clean it well and find the source.

I had the same wear issues on my Charger 12 transmission... but it did not create a leak.  Mine was leaking at the motion control valve on the front but as mentioned the drip showed up at a lower point on the transmission.  A member here was kind enough to help me out with some of those seals.... have you brake cleaned the entire area to help find the source?  Sometimes when everything is wet, it’s hard to actually pinpoint where it comes from.

Here are a couple shortcuts to my build where these issues were referenced a bit.

I assume you mean the area circled here.  Unlikely the rubbing caused the leak unless it is very severe.  Could be running down from the axle seals or from the motion control up top.  Neither of those require splitting the case so i agree clean her up and make sure you know where the leak is before you open it up.

One more thought...make sure the drain plug is tight....really tight
