double D pulley conversion = has anyone tried this??

Hi All,

I am hoping to convert my cast iron double d center pulley to work with the 3/4" shafts.  I had the pulley milled and fitted with a bronze bushing.  The fit is great and still fits nicely on the double d spindle I have.  TOP pic shows pulley on dd spindle.  The issue is the bottom of the pulley.  It has no short collar as the new round shaft pullies do.  I was thinking of putting on a blade spacer just below the pulley to clear the spindle rim.  The blade space would sit right on the spacer seal like an extension.  Has anyone tried this?  Has it worked? Thanks!

I had mine bored out and bushed doen to 5/8" to run on metric spindles. They had to be faced off to fit.  It's been quite a few years at least 25.  Had a drawing on the computer but that computer is long gone.

The the metric spindles have a machined spacer between spindle bearings and the pulley is helt in place with a lock washer and 5/8" nut. My deck is 75 -48MSO1 that I bought new in 1977 with a C-120. It has been had the spindles up graded several time in the last 42 years from the original Double D's to 3/4 keyed to metric. The 3/4" keyed did hold up very well. I think

they use too small a key.  Should have used a square key.

You can eliminate the key

I just changed mine out to metric . The standard 6203 bearings are a lot cheaper. Back before the internet I would go to the auto parts store and buy Chevy  alternator bearings. Some times I would have to go to a couple of places to get all the bearings i needed. I bet people rebuilding Chevy alternators wondered what happened to all the bearings.

Well, I have the converted double D pulley on the deck.  I trimmed a 3/4 washer to fit the indent in the bottom of the cast iron pulley that allows the pulley to clear the spindle housing.  I'll give it a try as soon as I figure out the belt tensioner.  Here is a pic of the deck with center pulley.  I'll post a separate question on the tensioner issue.1316976262_WH36Deckconversionwithcenterpulley.jpg.8f89194c256636b6c576e66415a11174.jpg
