Pullstart 63,529 #53 Posted July 24, 2019 I laid in my filler and anti-shrinkage rod, then welded my first seams this morning. I’ll end up hand belt sanding the piece to remove the excessive spatter and to dress the welds as smoothly as possible. Luckily after both welding passes, my angle checked out as un-moved! 3

Pullstart 63,529 #55 Posted July 24, 2019 Snapped this picture, it has the shape of that GT-1600 hood we brought home! I am attempting to put some bend in the second score, but it’s fighting me pretty good. I’ll bust out the cutting torch in the morning and warm it up a bit!
Tractorhead 9,065 #56 Posted July 25, 2019 Looking a good but hard work, especially at this Temperatures.
Pullstart 63,529 #57 Posted July 25, 2019 I built a couple braces to keep some stress off the first bends while I force the second ones into submission. It seems to be helping great! 2

Pullstart 63,529 #59 Posted July 25, 2019 I am not a neat person. I try, but it’s just the way I am I guess. But sometimes a little tidying goes a long way. 1
Pullstart 63,529 #60 Posted July 25, 2019 Long ways to go, but it’s found the general shape! I flipped an image to better picture the finished product compared to the scale model. 3 1 1
Pullstart 63,529 #61 Posted July 25, 2019 I’m sure hand drills and a tap handle would have been just fine, but this mag drill was offered for the project. I can see one of these on the shelf some day! 4 1
Tractorhead 9,065 #62 Posted July 25, 2019 The magnetic Drill is for such work a musthave. could try myself several weeks ago a Milwaukee MD42 with 3 gears and speedcontrol. By 1200Watts it seems, nothing can stop that machine. Im impressed about that nice Machine, it is definitiv on my Wishlist in upper TopTen. simply to handle. Have fun with that real cool Tool.

I used it once more for corner holes on this pocket. I’ll end up building a power supply channel out of angle iron and this is the access box. These Annular Cutters are pretty cool too! I would call them super tough hole saws! 2 1
Stormin 9,983 #64 Posted July 25, 2019 The mag drill etc brings memories of days long gone. Great machines. But a word of caution. If using upside down, ie roof girders, make sure they are tied/chained up, in case some numpty turns the electric off. It happen me. Fortunately the drill landed in the cherry picker box. Unfortunately it skinned my shin from knee to ankle. I never did find out which Richard Head, Dick to his friends, electrician isolated the power. 1
Pullstart 63,529 #65 Posted July 25, 2019 I read on the side to use the chain... couldn’t figure out why! Thanks Norm!
Tractorhead 9,065 #66 Posted July 25, 2019 Ouch, yes a good advice, because this little machine is brut force. To save it double by a chain or a rope is definitely really senseful.
Pullstart 63,529 #67 Posted July 25, 2019 This belt sander was on Amazon for something like 40 bones and I figured it was worth a shot on these seams. I figured there would be more control than a flap disc on a grinder. I roughed in the welds with the flap disc and finished with this. Worth every penny! 4
Tractorhead 9,065 #68 Posted July 25, 2019 Nice result, and for that price, you made definitely no mistake..
Pullstart 63,529 #69 Posted July 26, 2019 A little filler work, and this radius will be ready for paint! I am going to sand the other filler rods before welding, that should have been done first. 4

The steel was clean and oil free so with ample argon supply, there shouldn’t be pitting. That’s a sign of some contaminate. The only thing I didn’t do was prep and clean the rod, so I am hoping that’ll take any possible contaminate out of the equation. 3
Pullstart 63,529 #72 Posted July 26, 2019 I believe it’s time to flip this thing. I made up these little rings to thread into the adjuster holes and assist with flipping. 3

Pullstart 63,529 #74 Posted July 26, 2019 @ebinmaine here’s a cleaned rod vs off the shelf. I think it’ll help!
