Leak at High - Low Range Selector

Recommended Posts

kthomas62

Guys,

Yesterday I took the rear wheels / tries off my 1988, 414-8 to do some clean up and painting and I noticed gear oil had been leaking out where the range selector goes into the top if the transmission, and running down the side of the case.

Is there an O-ring or some type of seal on those?   (Photo for reference)

Thanks!
Kevin

Couple things come to mind.

Is this parked out in the rain or under cover?

What's the condition of the boot on the main shifter lever?

Have you drained the transmission oil lately? If so, how much did you put back in?

Hi Eric,

The leak is coming out from around the High - Low ranger selector, where it goes into the top of the transmission. The Wheel Horse has never spent a night outside my shop since I have owned it. I have just recently serviced the transmission and it was nice new oil coming out from around the selector.

That was where I was headed too...

I don't know the specs on that one off the top of my head but it should have had about 1.5 to 2 quarts put in.

I was just thinking too..... When you drained the transmission did you use the correct drain plug on the very bottom at the back near the hitch?

Also, were you able to raise the front of the tractor enough to get the fluid from the front of the transmission to run over the hump in the middle and go out the back drain?

These are things that have gotten me in trouble in the past.

Doesn't it have a dip stick in the rear.

Your 8 speed will take 2 quarts. You may be a tad over if you didn't get the old oil drained out in the front of the hump but that shouldn't be a problem. It's weird. If it's leaking from the hi/low shifter you'd think it would be coming out of the main shifter too. Are you sure it's not some oil that dripped there making you think it's a leak? :eusa-think:

@kthomas62  to answer your question, there is no "O" ring or gasket involved here.  To check if it is over full...open the fill plug on the left side of the rear of the trans.  Let the oil come out until it stops coming out, replace plug.  You now have the correct amount of oil in the case.  1 1/2 to 2 qts. :occasion-xmas:

Guys,

Thank you very much, all who responded. Yeah, it does have a dipstick and forever, when I would check it, the level was in the hash marks. When I pulled the wheels / tires off to repaint them, I noticed black dirt on the right side of the tranny case, so I assumed it was leaking out of the high - low range selector.

Tonight I raised the front, removed the small plug near the hitch, and drained all the oil out to change it. I put 1 1/4 quarts in and will re-check it tomorrow after it's sat overnight.

Thank you guys!

Two pages from the Lube Chart for your tractor are posted here. Click on the picture and again on the next page. No need to download anything to see them.
