Commando 800 w/8-speed

Picked up this tractor yesterday couldn't tell from his pictures that it had a 8-speed I looked through the manual and does show it as option Kohler 8 hp  1972 model 1 0110 7  serial 889625

With the round knobs that might be a six-speed.

I was buying it for parts but now I'm not sure what I will do kinda think I need to save it.

Odd because the 1-0110 should have 3 forward speeds and 43-1/2" wheelbase.

The Raider 8 model 1-0330 has 6 forward speeds and 45-1/2" wheelbase.

Besides... Excellent combo already with the 8 horse and hi/lo.

I don't see the round knobs as a factor Eric but they were period correct. An 8 speed would be a bit easier to swap but that's not saying that it isn't a 6 speed. An 0110 Commando 800 is what I restored for my grandson. Originally a 4 speed with 10" rears. Easy enough to put 12" on it as that's what I did. From the pics that tranny swap was well done with attention to detail. Geez, that shifter decal looks original. Do you suppose some left South Bend like that? :eusa-think:

I was thinking that... Or a dealer install like auto dealerships have done?

That could be. We all know that the Ponds like to mess with our heads and it wouldn't surprise me if the dealers compounded that. The rear wheels are cleaner and 'whiter' than the fronts indicating a swap, probably more recent. :)

I would not part it out the commando 800 was only made for 2 years. Everything about the tractor appears period correct like patina, what bolts are visible do not appear to have had a wrench on them for a very long time. And even that shifter decal has been there a long time as well, the only thing that stands out are the larger white rear wheels. I think you made a great find enjoy it.

I was reading the Commando 800 manual on this website and it shows a 8 hp 8-speed option it shows the front rims at 6" for the 8 hp rear tires were 23x7.50-12 for the 8-speed option for sure the rear tires now are not original it had plastic wheel weights maybe that is why the wheels are so white

One thing for sure...that is not a parts tractor...definitely worth saving.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

   I'm liking what  @ELECTRORIC was saying about the 8 speed option.  They used 3 different transmissions in 1972.  It should be fairly easy to figure out what transmission is in here.  1. was what would have been original...the #5085 4 speed.  2. the 8 speed #5086.  This transmission had the Hi/Low with a 4 pinion differential and 1" axles.  3. the 10 pinion Limited Slip #5073 with 1 1/8" axles.

   The brake drum would be on the cluster gear shaft on all of these transmissions.  The dead give away would be if it has 1" axles. :occasion-xmas:

So, measure the axle diameter, and post a picture of the left side of the transmission from the back and from above if possible.

That is a very nice find, and is probably on the rare side.

Thanks Steve I'm going to save it engine has a blown rod but I can take care of that  the axles measure 1-1/8" looks like the brake drum is toward the rear next to the axle.

Any idea how many of this configuration was produced? Here is picture of my commando 800 the one in the rear, it has the 3 speed.

@ELECTRORIC I know anything is possible, but if the brake drum is next to the axle, you probably have a #5071.  That trans was last used in 1969.  I think that might take the "ordered that way" option off the table.  The linkage would have to be modified for one thing.  Does this trans have a dip stick??  Is there a 1" extension where the fill level plug is??  This is why we need the pictures.  :occasion-xmas:

 The manual we have here is for the 73 no-names and not precisely correct for the 1972 1-0110 Commando 800. In 73 they had the 8hp 4-speed (1-0130 and identical to the 72 Commando 800) and the 8, 10, 12, & 14hp 8 speeds. The 8 speed was not an option on the Commando but was actually a different model. All Commando 800's on this side of the big pond have the 5085 transmission and 6" & 10" wheels. I seriously doubt that an 8 speed and the 12" rears were 'options' because just upgrading to a 8-8 speed would be the same. In 1972 the Raider 8 was the one with the 5086 transmission. I could be the classic example with a 72 Commando 800 and mess with peoples minds with it's 12" rears, flip forward seat.....etc. It's also very possible that the beauty slipped out of the factory and didn't get caught. In any case I wouldn't change a thing on it.  :)

I will take some pictures tomorrow when I pull the wheel off to fix hub, it has a hole in the body for a dipstick but the trans doesn't have a dipstick and there is a extension on the filler tube

Be aware if you are pulling the hub they don't just slip off and the fill tube is where you should find the dip stick.

Took some pictures of trans, going to split it input shaft bearing is bad and the differential sounds like it has gravel in the gears oil looked good the axles do turn in different direction.

The extended fill plug would indicate it was ..at least originally ...a 10 pinion.  If it was still in there and the spring was in good shape the wheels should turn in the same direction.  That yours is going opposite indicates the differential may have been swapped out or the spring is shot.  If it is a 10 pinion with a bad spring Lowell sells replacement springs,

Trans turned out to be a 5060 so it looks like somebody did a conversion long time ago. I'm going to keep it the same as I got it.

Is that the 10 pinion with limited-slip?

 

if it is, you should probably throw another tension spring in the differential.

Yes it is a 10 pinion limited slip I have a 5071 w/bad axles & bearings but the limited slip worked good so I hope between the two trans. I get one good one.

All parts are inter-changeable between the #5060 and the #5071.  The difference between those 2 transmissions...#5060 has aluminum end plates on the differential...#5071 has steel end plates.  :occasion-xmas:
