GAW9576 2 #1 Posted July 1, 2019 I've done a bit of searching and came up short on info. I have a Toro wheelhorse 270 hydro and it seems very week in forward and reverse, I took the fender and seat off and pulled the vent hose off since I don't see any other way of checking the fluid. The fluid is visible and about an inch down. I can't find info on what the level should be, what type of oil is used and if I change the oil whether there is a filter. Any help would be appreciated. Here are some picture if they help with ID.
WHX?? 49,164 #2 Posted July 1, 2019 First thing I would do is give it a bath. Hydros and dirt do not play well. The fan on top is there for a reason, to help keep the unit cool. It cannot do so if cooling fins are plugged up. Your issue may be a linkage adjustment issue or even a plain old worn out transaxle. I am by no means an expert on this model but here are the manuals for it. https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/search/?q=310-3000&type=downloads_file
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #3 Posted July 1, 2019 I don't know anything about your model but suspect it is a 2000 model number 72108. Tractor serial number will be 200xxxxxx. All these files come up on a search and with this type of link they are all mixed up. https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/search/?&q="2000 270-h"&type=downloads_file&search_and_or=or Let us know how you make out. GAW9576 2 #5 Posted July 2, 2019 Thank you for the welcomes and the links. I was able to find the oil type and the amount that should be put in through a Hydro Gear distributor called M&D mower and appliance. They said it takes 122 oz. Of 20w50. I'm going start with changing the oil. Some of the linkages are a bit worn but nothing seems terrible to me not that I'm an expert. Model 72108 is correct and the serial # too. I'll wash it of when I get it pulled from the tractor because it will be a lot easier to get to everything.
GAW9576 2 #6 Posted July 3, 2019 So I got the transaxle out, washed it off, let it dry, drained the oil and removed the filter. I just need to get a new filter then I can put it all back together and test it out. I have more pictures of anyone cares but here are two for now.
WHX?? 49,164 #7 Posted July 3, 2019 How did the oil that came out look/smell? Any noticeable metal particles? Watch out for getting dirt in it when you are buttoning it up.

I washed the transaxle pretty good before I took anything apart to be sure there was no dirt on it and have been as careful as I can be in an Old Barn to keep the Dirt away from everything. The oil looks and smells pretty normal to me I don't see any particles floating in it and other than being darker than new oil it looks pretty clean. The magnet in the housing had some very fine metal dust on it, again to me seemed like a normal amount on a 15 year old mower, no big shavings or anything. The metal dust was two different colors one more of the color of aluminum the other was darker almost black and ever so slightly coarser there was less of the darker stuff. I cleaned that off carefully with paper towel and put the transaxle back together till I get the filter which I ordered today. I also put a rubber stopper in the breather hole and a bag over the end of the hose connector fitting to be sure no dirt got in them.

GAW9576 2 #11 Posted July 3, 2019 I guess I just had to refresh the page and now it let's me load more.
GAW9576 2 #12 Posted July 6, 2019 Quick update I'm waiting on the filter to come in the mail but the holiday probably slow that down a bit, in the meantime I've been looking over the exploded view of the transaxle and I did find the service manual. The frustrating thing is the service manual tells how to do a purge to get rid of extra air after doing an oil change and says to do part of procedure with the bypass valve open and part of it with it closed but it doesn't show a picture of the bypass valve or specify which direction is open or closed. GAW9576 2 #13 Posted July 13, 2019 The filter came in yesterday, unfortunately about half way through the process of putting everything back together I re-injured my back, luckily not as bad as the last time or the original injury. Everything was going pretty good up to that point. Hopefully in a few days I'll be able to finish things up. Here is the new filter in, and I have the rtv silicone gasket spread on. And a picture of the cover back on a bolted down. The position of the little rectangle the red arrow is pointing to is important. Also I finally found out the bypass valve is the drive disengage lever. Why couldn't they just say that in the instructions???
GAW9576 2 #14 Posted July 29, 2019 I finally got everything back together and the drive seems nice and strong, also considerably quieter than before. I tested it out for at least an hour to be sure it wasn't just running good when it was cool since the problem originally started when I was at the end of mowing the lawn.
