Paint spindles or not?

Recommended Posts

Cleaning up a 42”SD and looking for thoughts and opinions on painting the aluminum spindle housings.

  Any harm in painting them?

I would not see any harm in painting them.

I'm thinking the design is more of a set of gussets than cooling fins like a head.  My vote is gloss ‘em up!

painting won,t stop the rot of acidic grass, left to mold , oil  will benefit it more, feeding the surface to prevent rot . regular under deck cleaning . air / sun drying and oil spray down saves your deck , jmoo. pete

I prime and paint mine. I still have some thirdy years old that are not eating away,  I painted them with Agriguard this spring I'll see how that holds up.

I believe in painting them ------- I definitely think it retards the corrosion! Even if only a little bit!

I agree with paint them to put a protective layer between the aluminum and grass rot, etc.  I like to paint between the aluminum to steel deck to reduce the chance of dissimilar metal galvanic corrosion.

All of my decks have had the spindles bead blasted, primed, and painted with silver paint.

They seem to be holding up fine.

I try to scrape off as much ground up grass a possible from under the deck after each mowing using a brass scraper.

These decks really only have a few spots where the grass builds up underneath with the left side of the two rightmost spindles being 2 of them.

I never mow wet grass so it does not stick too badly.

The topside just gets blown off after each mowing along with the entire tractor.

all the undersides of my decks get painted whatever gloss rustoleum is left over in cans,  good way to get rid of the paint and the gloss finish cleans off nice

On the deck I recently did I painted them with chassis saver. I think it is similar to POR 15.
