csvt99 173 #1 Posted June 29, 2019 The clutch is sticking on my 1999 314-8. It's greased up and working properly, but once it gets warmed up, it stays depressed and I have to put my toe underneath and pull it back up. The clutch spring does not look original, so I'm thinking I should just replace it with the OEM part. Is this a common problem?
The Tuul Crib 7,337 #2 Posted June 29, 2019 That is the first thing l would check. I would also pull the bell of and grease up the needle bearings. I would use some synthetic grease
JAinVA 4,622 #3 Posted June 29, 2019 If you have to pull the pedal back with your foot and there is no linkage bind it is the return spring.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #4 Posted June 29, 2019 Is the gas shock still mounted on the right side? If so try removing it. Garry

Guest 88vic #6 Posted June 30, 2019 To keep from popping the clutch, giving the true feeling of riding a bucking horse 😂😂😂

Guest 88vic #8 Posted June 30, 2019 Hold on buddy ! I have that very same issue with my 314-8, havent had time to look at it, I suspect my return spring is broken, I can tell the gas shock is still on there. Ill pull the pedal back with my foot and away I go. I really need to fix that before I get thrown off myself.
csvt99 173 #9 Posted June 30, 2019 About 2 weeks ago I took the time to make some adjustments so all the linkages were clear, greased the pedal and oiled the gas shock. It worked like a charm for one mowing session but after that it was back to it's old tricks. Does anyone have a link to the parts diagram that would show the correct part numbers for replacement springs?
Guest 88vic #10 Posted June 30, 2019 I use parts tree most of the time to look up parts. But manuals are on here, im just not that good to find them, im more familiar with the tree. Someone will be along shortly to help. Meanwhile ill look and see if I can find the part number for that spring, I need one myself as well. Ill let you know the number unless others beat me to it. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #14 Posted June 30, 2019 Here is a parts list No spring in 1999 models. You need to go back a few years. It is item 48. In 1990 they used an air damper plus the spring. https://www.partstree.com/parts/toro/mowers-lawn-garden-tractor/31-12k801-312-8-toro-312-8-garden-tractor-1990/clutch-brake-and-speed-control-linkage/ Garry

If it doesn't work I will sell it to you for a discount 👍. I will check with my local Toro dealer, but it looks like Jack's has it too. https://www.jackssmallengines.com/jacks-parts-lookup/part/toro/108035
Guest 88vic #16 Posted June 30, 2019 Lol, Garry says the newer ones dont use a spring, just has the damper. Id see if I could remove the damper and put the spring in its place. I dont understand how just the damper can pull back like a spring could, all it does is slow movement similiar to whats on cars, trucks, to keep from bouncing up and down. gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,096 #17 Posted June 30, 2019 I should reword that. The 1999 uses a spring inside the damper - not a separate spring. Garry
Guest 88vic #18 Posted June 30, 2019 I learned something new today, thanks Garry. I wasnt aware.
csvt99 173 #19 Posted July 11, 2019 Put the new spring on tonight. Seems to work great so far but I haven't been able to mow the entire yard yet. You can see the difference between the one that was on it, which does not look original. The Toro spring is much stiffer.
