We had some Caz brew Friday evening. I don't really drink during the day

Yeah, that's me. Mary Poppins.

It's my identical twin that enjoys a few cocktails

John, I kind of knew you got to sit with Cas for a while.  Talk about some Excellent Stuff...TOP SHELF. :occasion-xmas:

Warm milk...that does not even sound good at 69.

Although I do like a nice strong White Russian, so technically that's still milk before bedtime. Belvedere Vodka, Kahlua with Half and Half and sometimes just a spot of carmel Bailey's. Sounds like a women's drink like Sparky would have but done right and they're actually pretty potent.

Maybe this thread should be renamed, "Belly up to the bar, pardner" or "Skoal till dig också".

Looks like this will be another thing to look forward to going to the show. Also a bootlegging run. I may have to reactivate all of my apparatuses. I may just take an RJ  running on alcohol too.

Now we're talk'n

A portable RJ still that can run entirely on it's on it's own brew, engine and also the heat source. The tough part is having enough left over to drink.

why wasn't all this stuff available for taste testing at the show?

I only brought enough to fuel the crazy horse this year.   Next year I'll bring enough to light up the fish.

I like that idea. I already know that my Rj will run on my stuff. Now just how to provide the heat for the apparatus.

An engine will run on it

Heat source for the pot

Now for a way to chill the coil

Need to add a small compressor and a vortex tube to chill the coil.

We're going to need a bigger tractor

My younger days had a lot of Dr Millicuddy's Menthol. They call it mentholmint now. We just had one rule, gotta throw the cap away once opened!

BTY, that clear quart on the right tested at 98.7.       That's % not proof and Terrys WH glass held up fine.

98.7?  Wow!

how’d they get passed the azeotrope?

Yes, I am also curious how that percentage was achieved. My stuff is 180 proof from a tall tower reflux still . I use several different types of stills and always experimented with different techniques. The limit however regardless what I use, as always been 90% which is right under what is naturally physically possible . I know how to get it higher but not without adding something to the mixture being boiled that I myself would not drink.

Yes, but only the stuff forced on us in the form of adulterated fuel. Using the pure stuff as fuel by your own choice is a fun and interesting activity.:)

While you can add another chemical to the mix to change the distillation characteristics, changing the pressure on the system will also shift or eliminate the azeotropic equilibrium point.  It's just unusual that somebody would make the effort to set up a still that way and it certainly wouldn't be a normal homespun solution.

It's certainly achievable to get higher purity ethanol, just curious what approach got them there.  Commercial enterprises would rarely bother since the energy input costs would far outweigh the marginal gain in potency.

There aren't many process that are more energy intensive than boiling water.

Steve

You have hit the point exactly. Playing with the pressure of the system is not something that one would want to be doing while doing this in the garage. It is dangerous enough as it is.As much as I enjoy doing this, while at it I am always on the verge of a heart attack. In actuality a more "normal" proof to be achieved without any greater effort is about 165 proof with a "normal" reflux still. Higher than from a single distillation will already involve a more sophisticated tower design. A pot still will almost never achieve that. I am also very curious how they achieved it and why. @Ed Kennell

Methanol. Ed's drinking rocket fuel

Isn't Methanol like 98%

It's been a while since I've been boil'n mash. Fun hobby but sometimes it's actually easier to just go buy a bottle of Everclear at 180 proof. All the work is done professionally. We used to mix that stuff with Hawaiian Punch and squeeze fresh fruit into it. Man that stuff was potent! It's good for soaking into a watermelon too.

Yes it is always easier to go buy it. If one considers all the expenses it is also cheaper to do so since I don't sell anything I make. Most of it is given away. All the equipment and materials turn out to be expensive. One is also always learning and trying new stuff and new improvements. It is however great fun and for some me included it is a cultural thing and something that needs to be continued and thought  to the next generation.

The funny thing is that although I was always aware of its physical and legal dangers, I was always relatively care free about it. However the arrival of the TV show "The Moonshiners" kind of ruined it for me making me much more conscious of everything that can go bad. Or perhaps it is a good thing?

The next time I journey to the mountains in western Pa,   I'll see if my nephew will disclose some details and pictures.

BTW Cas, in addition to being a distiller, he is also a woodworker.    He has built several sawmills including a mobile that he tows directly to the tree.    He features slab wood furniture and is careful not to damage the bark of his lumber.
