417-8 Shifter came out and I don't have a clue ??

Recommended Posts

Finish mowing the other day, pulled in the garage went to shut down and shifter lever came out in my hand. The collar went in the transmission.

Really want to keep using this machine, has a twin 18hp Kohler replacement engine with 400 hrs or so.

I know I got to get the collar out but haven't had any luck yet. At least the transmission is in natural.

I really don't want to have to tear it down. Any ideas ??

:text-imsorry:      The collar is large enough that it probably wouldn't get snagged in any of the gears, but you know how Murphy's Law can make the improbable a reality in a heartbeat. If you can't retrieve it with a bent wire I'm afraid surgical extrication is the only safe way to go.

If the collar is in the transaxle, I doubt you can get it out with out splitting the case.Stevasaurus has posted videos on U-tube covering the process.I hate to say this but if you run the tractor without getting the collar out you will be most likely be splitting the case but to replace internal parts damaged by the collar.

Do you have the dogpoint screw that held the collar in place?  I have a feeling an arrangement of strong magnets and bent wire could fish it back out.  I wonder though about that roll pin that used to hold things together.  Did it snap, or is it missing from the shifter?

Auto Zone, NAPA and others sell pencil magnets...that's your best chance...before opening it up.  :notworthy:

I've got the screw, it must have backed out and caused the problem. Was laying on case just at the hole it's supposed to go into.

I have always thought that the shifting lever and the collar were fitted together rather tightly, must have worn.

Did some fishing today and caught the sucker.. I picked up a MAC MPF-4 pick up tool, used on eBay and would recommend them.

Glad I could reach the collar but sure is worn, may need another shifter ?? No wonder it fell into the transmission.

You could line up the holes and have an experienced welder weld the donut top and bottom to the shifter. Many came from the factory welded.

With the donut sloopy on the shaft I would not expect a new roll pin to last long.

Rusty, that is so cool that you fished that out.  Do what Garry said and get it welded.  :occasion-xmas:

Maybe welding what I have could be considered preventative maintenance....

If I’m pulling them for inspection, I may as well lay a bead...  :handgestures-thumbupright:  It’s like that cooking infomercial tool...  “Set it.... and forget it!”

Talked to my friend today and he agrees on the welding, just not sure on how everything lines up and where. Also the roll pin looks pretty rough. Believe replacing it would be a positive. Dose the dog screw tighten down against the roll pin ? As it is now this screw doesn't tighten down on the roll pin or even close. Little advise appreciated.

The roll pin did not come all the way through.  When it was flush  the back side there was enough room in the front for the dog  point to seat. Use a 3/4" roll pin

Can the 32121-14 pin still be purchased ?

WHX??

Yes put a roll pin back in for positioning then weld it. Of the dozens I've had out I don't think I've ever had one that wasn't welded. Just a hole for the dog point.

Make sure the shifter boot is in good shape. Now might be a good time to change fluids too. Always easier to refill  through the shift hole

Anyone have the actual part # on the actual shifting leaver or manual with donut ? May just replace with new.
