Hydrostatic Tranny Temperature

Newbie question:

I have a 1968 Charger with a Sundstrand hydrostatic transmission.  The tranny is smooth and quiet—no apparent problems.  However, I noticed the cast iron gets hot to the touch after about an hour’s mowing use.  Is that typical or may I have a problem?  Thanks!

They get rather warm.  Be sure that the cooling fins and the fan are clean.  Run the engine full throttle when mowing.

Sundstrand hydros  will run 180 when working hard...That is hot to the touch.  Like lynnmore said keep here clean and run her at full throttle  I blow mine off with compressed air if they are on mowing duty.

OK, thanks—got it.  I do keep the cooling fins and really the whole tractor very clean and used my leaf blower after each use to blow off debris/dust.  I will keep doing that too.  Thanks again and take care!
