854 voltage regulator problem?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, recently got an 854 that hadn't been running in about 4-5 years.  Got it running today, new switch, new points/condenser, new plug and plug wire.  Anywho, after getting it going ,I notice the amp meter didn't appear to be working.  So I started to try and trouble shoot that, I'm thinking its shot but I dunno.  Which leads me to my real question.  In my reading on the webs and forum, I got the impression that the voltage regulator should put out approx 13.5 volts if its working properly.  My battery was bought brand new last week, it reads 12.3 volts with engine off, start the engine idle up abit, and it reads 12.1 volts.

Sp, does that mean my regulator is not working? I did clean off the leads and connections,  no issues starting the engine at all.  I took a picture of the regulator originally on the tractor, looks burnt up to me, .?

Now, I do have another regulator from a different Kohler, I swapped it out, but still no change in voltage readings.  Admittedly it was pretty corroded on the terminals, and it's possible I dont have it grounded good.  Or it's from a pretty old engine too, and could be bad aswell.  The last two pictures are the second regulator, they look pretty good inside to my eyes.

Soooo, where should I go with this?  What to look for or how to test?  If I need to order a new regulator, where?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks much.

WHX??

I would get a new reg Buff ... they are pretty cheap. Surf pat's small engine plus.  @Achto can you toss him a :text-link:?

Ther is a ground strap the connects  the reg frame to ground  make sure that is ther.

There is also a boatload of info on these in the files section but one needs a strong electrical backround to interpret them.

Let us know if you need the files.

Yeah, I think that is the first order of business.   Actually, I am an electrician,  but I have forgotten alot!!!.  Also looking at a sg rebuild kit if necessary.

WHX??

Well then Buff if you is  a sparky it  puts the generator in the basket! :ychain:

Seriously I would go through the S/G just to make sure everything is copastechik ...I know I did'nt speel that right :D

I been meaning to do a rebuild thread on these but never seem to get around to it.

I save tractors has got some kits on evil bay as well as others. Brushes and bearings and such. I find that with the internals most often just bearings and a good cleaning are all needed. Undercut the armature and clean it up. Maybe ohm through the field windings.

Like I said have files on these but all on my work pc :hide:

@mhlmeader Here is a link to Pat's small engine plus. http://www.psep.biz/store/kohler_starter_motors.htm

Part number for the regulator is AHGDR6004, it's near the bottom of the page. About $16.00. Take a look around their site for any thing else you may need, it's $7.95 for shipping no matter how big or small the order is.

Did you ground the F terminal of the generator while it is running???  If the Voltage jumps up to about 14 then indeeed your regulator is bad.  if it stays at 12 then the field coil in the gennny probably needs replacing

I have not done that yet, was gonna install a new regulator cause original looked kinda fried, then go from there, I think I read your suggestion from other post you commented on in the past, so that was definently next in my troubleshooting,  thanks for the suggestion
