ohiofarmer 3,265 #1 Posted June 19, 2019 Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do to get the lawn mowed. My first parts swap was a straight up swap with an eight speed. I was wanting to restore [paint] a mechanically perfect but rusty 12 horespower with the eight speed. I never should have torn that tractor down as it worked a treat.. The Raider 10 lost the keyway to the axle, and it was an easy swap for my shop that has a heavy duty bike lift.. the Raider lost a piston when the aluminum volcanoed out the edge of the piston when all 3 rings lined up due to a scratch in the engine block. The raider gave its tie rods to a short hood 1056. I wanted a spare tractor, so the previously mentioned 12 horsepower gave its engine [a rocker mount] to a C-141 that ran poorly due to an egg shaped bore. The 12 is a bit underpowered to run a 48" deck on a hydro, but now i have a tractor as a spare. I like the C-141 so much that I definitely will rebuild that engine. Oh, and the C-141 is wearing a 520 seat which fits without modification. Very Very Nice. Now I wonder about that front axle The 520 has a Predator 14 horsepower at present, but i am not sure if that engine will power an electric clutch from another Electro 12 I have in the Hoard. And a little short hood Automatic with a 6.5 Predator that hooks up OK. I also have a B80 that needs a fuel pump and another 8 Horsepower with missing tins that runs fine. The Raider may just get one of the Eights.Or maybe the unmounted one with some borrowed tins. Or swap out a fuel pump to the B-800. Or swap the Eight Horsepower into the little short hood auto.. The main thing is that you can keep your tractors going so that you can get your work done. Sounds like you're keeping that part covered. But in my opinion, half the fun of this hobby is mixing and matching and customizing. "What ever works." Out of my dozen Horses, there are only a few that I have tried to keep all original. Have fun. The Tuul Crib 7,336 #4 Posted June 19, 2019 Yes l do l bought an old 1067 back in December and the 10 hp techy needed work so l decided to step up to a 14 hp kohler. Since then. lve been adding little differences here and there. Now l found a donor 8hp no name and took the foot boards off it and put them on my 1067. My 656 has a Honda motor, my 657 has a Kohler Magnum 8, my GT1600 WorkHorse has a Kohler Magnum 10 and last but not least my C-105 has been fitted with Kohler 241 replacement short block. 71_Bronco 1,072 #6 Posted June 19, 2019 My Commando 8 is somewhat of a Franken-horse right now, as someone previously added the WH headlights to it, with some hokey switch. Also has a TSC seat with C-Series seat springs. At some point, the tractor will be getting an 8-speed swap, either a 5060 or a 5071 (havent opened it yet to see the differential). I think you're going to find the workers will be Franken-horses to keep them going and working, but your show tractors will be more stock, at least that's what I'd guess. Actually since most of us own several Horses, we try to keep the "Family Heirloom" ones original, but it is fair game for the working horses. ohiofarmer 3,265 #10 Posted June 19, 2019 I should be more specific, but the reason for all this is that sometimes you need a tractor for a specific purpose. Mowing down grass taller than the hood is a task for a 8 speed, but the 1056 did it with a four. The Raider 10 with a 8 speed and side drive and the resulting shorter belts works better. Mule drive tractors just overheat those longer belts that cost a bunch to replace. And so it goes. I got way behind when I took on two big remodel jobs "after" retirement. I still have my rental properties and farm. A motorcycle crash last month did not help as I have been working all i can and now the pain is within manageable limits. The pain was the worst wen sitting around anyway, so I believe that forcing things a bit can make the healing go faster Anyway, what other machine has more swap options than these little Horses? One of the 2 projects I'm thinking of for this coming winter is a C Series chassis with big rear wheels, 8 speed, unknown engine yet but hoping to use the K 582 V-Twin.
