Drive Pulley Material

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

Need to get a new pulley for my new 8-speed transmission I will be putting into my Commando.

I need a pulley that is 4" OD (same size as my current drive pulley), but with a 5/8" ID.

I can get this pulley made out of a variety of materials, including cast zinc (least expensive), stamped steel (from TSC), and cast iron (most expensive).

Is there one type that is best for this application? Or does material not really matter much? I dont mind spending money on the cast iron if that is the best option.

Thanks!

Do not go with the pot metal or cast zinc pulleys. They will grenade  and are not designed for higher hp. I like the cast pulleys over the steel but have used both.

You can find a plethora of pulleys and other good stuff here

Thank you for the link. I was looking at that same pulley on Grainger, and they want $39.

I figured the cast ones were not worth looking at, but wasn't sure if the Steel would be okay or if the Cast Iron would be the best bet.

Steel or cast

I have both as well.

Both seem fine after a couple years usage

I believe the 867 used a 4" pulley 7233 with a 5/8" ID for a 1/2" belt.

I believe the 1067 and 1267 used a 4" pulley 7232 with a 5/8" ID for a 1/2" belt.

I don't know why they would have different part numbers. They all used the 5060 transmission.

Garry,

Thanks for the part numbers. I have either a 5060 or a 5071 (haven't opened it up yet). I want to keep the same pulley size as my current 5053 trans (3-speed unidrive), so I don't have to worry about modifying the belt guard.

Nick you might be able to take the pulley right off of your three speed and put it right on to a 6 or 8 speed.

If the shaft size turns out to be different let me know.

I do have a couple of Parts 8-speed Transmissions.

I'd be happy to try to help you out.

According to the parts breakdown in my manual, I have a 1611 pulley, which is listed as 4" OD, and 3/4" ID.

According to the unidrive manual, the 5053 (commando 8 transmission), the input shaft seal is 3/4".

I was looking at the sleeve adapters off ebay, but those are for shafts with big long keys, but the input shafts are wood rift keys, so I dont think they would work. Plus, it's not that much more to do it right and get the appropriate pulley.

What about using a sheave with a 5/8" tapered bushing/insert?

Most available now will accommodate a 1/2" or 5/8" belt so may need to go to 4-1/4" or 4-3/4" pulley to get the belt diameter down to 4"

The bushing keyway should be correct

https://www.princessauto.com/en/detail/5-8-in-bore-split-tapered-bushing/A-p8069502e

These can be installed from either side if there is a clearance issue.

One pair of holes pulls the bushing into the pulley and the other pair are used to remove the pulley from the shaft.

Harbour Freight or Northern Tool are similar to Princess Auto in Canada.

Good Info @gwest_ca Garry.

When I was trying to configure the 1267 I bought a new pulley that was a 1/2 or 5/8 belt usable.

It wasn't too far off either way and it worked fine.
