josephd2212 2 #1 Posted June 18, 2019 I just installed a new PTO clutch plate on my 414-8. I noticed, the roller bearings inside the pulley bell (if that is the right name) have a purple grease. What king of grease is recomended for use on those bearings?
The Tuul Crib 7,336 #2 Posted June 18, 2019 Ive been using a synthetic grease .
peter lena 8,583 #3 Posted June 18, 2019 do not over grease that bearing , agree with above on synthetic grease, excess grease will splatter and fly onto clutch area. i would lubricate any related lever point to enhance easy lever action , pete
oliver2-44 9,695 #4 Posted June 18, 2019 If you have some wheel bearing grease it will work fine, it's probable close to what it had originally. If I were buying some, I would buy synthetic. The bearing grease does not work hard in this application. The grease is working when the bearing is "idling" with no load. When you engage the clutch and put load on the pulley, the bearing becomes fixed so the grease is not doing any work under a "loaded" condition. 1

Not sure of the part number off hand.

doc724 925 #8 Posted June 19, 2019 I used high temp grease with a 500F drip point. Although the bearing does not do much work, it gets mighty hot since it is on the crank. High temp grease is red in color.

josephd2212 2 #13 Posted June 21, 2019 I will have to take mine back apart and check to make sure that seal is in good condition. When I removed it, to replace the clutch plate, I did not notice any issues with anything else. I just saw the purple grease on the bearing, inside the pulley. Didn't look like there was much left, and it may have never been greases in its life. I'll probably just put a small glob inside and put it back together. doc724 925 #14 Posted June 23, 2019 After I took my first PTO bell apart and found the needle bearing to be bone dry, I decided it needed to be cleaned and lubed. I took out the thrust bearing (held in with a snap ring and light press fit) and cleaned out the needle bearing with kerosene. Then I took new grease and forced it between the rollers with my finger. Not too much as Peter said lest it get thrown out when the bell spins and gets all over the friction disc. After my success on the first one, I did them all. Bearings are engineered to last a long time but many of the machines we have are 30-40 years old (some even older). I doubt the original WH designers ever dreamed that so many of their products would still be around today.
