Rear End Locks up on 520H

Recommended Posts

Workin_Horses

So today I was about finished with a job using my 520h with a loader on it.  I came up to get another load of sticks on the forks and the tractor stopped dead in its tracks and it sounds like the transmission has a heavy load on it.   I put it in reverse and it moves about 6-feet and then the same thing tractor stops dead in it's tracks and it sounds like the transmission has a heavy load on it. then I go go back and forth no more then those 6-8 feet and each time it would stop.

I know that's not much to go on but anybody have any ideas?

That happened to me on a C-160.  One of the DIFFERENTIAL BOLTS came loose, broke, then caught in gears.

MAYBE you have a sheared WOODRUFF KEY in an axle hub... If you're lucky, that is.

I have a replacement differential if yours is broken....you gotta open to trans to find out for sure.

Thanks for the update....obviously not what I wanted to hear but it is what I suspected..... anyhow, I used my buddies loader lift the rear end to get it on my trailer in order to get it home but now I have to get it off my trailer in to my garage....The wheel free spin fine when I jack up the tractor but won't spin past the spot where they lock when it's sitting on the ground so therefore I can't roll it off the trailer.  Is there any way to disengage the transmission so the tractor would free roll?

roll it as far as it will let you then throw the jack back under the tractor and reset the tires to get it to roll farther back. You are lucky that it didn't blow down through the rear end housing. I would pull it apart to see what happened but you your best bet might be to just stick another rear in it. You should try and make sure it is internal before tearing it apart to far. Jack it up and check to see if anything else is or could be binding to keep rear from turning around a complete revolution. good luck

When you jack it up and turn one wheel is the other one turning in the other direction?

Do you have a good two wheel dolly that you could slip under the tractor's rear end to get it into the shop?

You could probably remove the rear tires and skid it into the shop on the hubs, they don't have much traction.

Well got it off the trailer.... put the rear wheels on 4-wheel dollies and then walked in down the ramp with the winch.....

As far as the wheels spinning when it was jacked up as I spun one forwards the other would spin backwards.

Have to look it over some more... anything I should look for in particular that would help figure out what the problem is?

Sounds like the differential is working fine. Sounds like a part is in the bottom of the trans axle and getting wedged between a couple of gear teeth. @stevasaurus may have an idea what is in there.

Eaton trans. You may have something damaged on the main gear/ pump gear area and not the differential. That would explain the wheels turning jacked up ( differential gears) but not when the tire are both turning forward (everything needs to move)

Had the same thing happen to my 520 H plowing snow several years ago. Had to have the dealer come out and drag it onto a trailer. Rear wheels would only turn one rvolution forward or back then would not allow further rotation. Apeareantly a bolt had backed out in the transaxle and was jamming up the gears, They told me I was lucky I didn't force it as the parts were no longer available for repair.
