Westwood S1300

Youngest Son-in-Law asked if I could collect a ride on mower, the owner of the holiday site he works at had given him. Also could I sort it out for him. Somethings not right with the steering he said. Not right was an understatement. It didn't.

Anyway we picked it up this morning. Westwood S1300. B&S 12-1/2hp with mowing deck. Age as yet unknown and in need of a good clean. On investigation I found the gear that engages the steering quadrant was badly worn. So worn it was not engaging the quadrant. New gear and quadrant needed. £80 off that site. Engine runs sweet as a nut and the oil is clean. Needs a battery clamp and that's about it.

Deck needs a good pressure wash underneath e seems sound.

Looks fairly new.

I wondered if maybe it had that psychokinesis steering.

Or the star wars "Force"... Wave hand left... Wave hand right...

After a bit of research found out was manufactured 80/7/2004.

Got the quadrant off this morning and closer inspection shows that is ok. Just the gear required. Just over £20.

Wonder what I should charge Son-in-law for labour? :D

Today I gave the deck a good clean underneath with a scraper and stiff brush. The shell is good and sound, BUT every bearing is seized solid. :( Sealed bearings and no grease nipples.

Judging by the grass that was wrapped round above the blades, (also the tractor axles), it was last used to cut long grass and just put away afterwards. Been in a shed for a couple of years.

Taken me nearly all day to strip it. One pulley is refusing to come off, so that's a trip to the farm and heat it up. Also the spindle housings, unless I can get the use of a press.

Finally got the deck rebuilt with all new bearings and seals. Been a right pig of a job, but all done now and at our Lisa's. Could do with a new drive belt for the spindles, but son-in-law can get that.

He asked what he owed me and I replied, "I'll get you back sometime". He did give me a litre bottle of Jack Daniels though. Cheers!
