SylvanLakeWH 25,596 #28 Posted July 28, 2022 Gotta reiterate the absolute need for a dead man hanging off the cables on these winch / cable / come along set ups… heavy blanket, chain whatever to weight down and catch / slow the slingshot if it releases or breaks… I’ve used a prusik knot around cable tied to object being pulled. If cable slips / breaks the prusik will drop the cable…

Slides when not under load. When under load it locks tight. 2

The workers digging the Erie canal in NY in the 1800's used a system like this for uprooting trees. Larger wheels (6-8' in diameter) and a pair of actual horses. I'll bet the Romans and maybe even the Egyptians had something like it, too!
Ed Kennell 38,206 #32 Posted July 29, 2022 Stump pull w/ mules (HORSES) using a lever - ALDEER.COM If you don't have a spare tire, you could use a long lever.
Handy Don 12,233 #33 Posted July 29, 2022 The spare tire idea is really a way to redirect the force, but it doesn't add leverage. The mules-and-lever is simple and effective with a massive increase in leverage. More elaborate, but when you are building a canal and you have a lot of tree stumps, well, this is pretty clever. Essentially a horizontal windlass on wheels. Must've weighed a few thousand pounds.
