Rear Discharge Mower Decks

Recommended Posts

8ntruck

I'm currently using a 5-1010 42" mower deck on my 14 HP 8 Speed tractor.  With about 20 trees on my property, leaf cleanup every year is a major task.  I am still looking for the 'magic bullet' for fall yard clean up.

I notice that there were 42" and 48" rear discharge mower decks made that will fit on my tractor.  Seems like a rear discharge mower deck combined with a towed lawn sweeper would be a pretty good combination.  Was anybody out there tried this combination?

Any comments or advice?

I do that while I'm mowing, cleans up the yard very well!

In the fall I use a tow behind wagon shredder/vacuum. Even with the leaves ground up I fill the bed of my pickup 7 to 10 times to get it all

I use a RD Recycler deck.Doesn't grind up everything but combine it with a sweeper and instead of multiple full bins , I can do my yard in 2 dumps.

The only way I would ever consider another rear discharge deck would be to either have some sort of grass catcher or sweeper, but that's only one opinion.

We may have a lot of rocks instead of soil here on the mountain but you all make me glad I don't have to move the leaves off what little poor excuse for a lawn we have.

When I was young my grampa had a Cub with a SD deck and a tow behind sweeper.

He'd just leave the sweeper on while mowing and get the clippings on the next pass sideways.

Dump when full. Repeat.

Not to side track, but Marv, what size deck is that? I use a 36 rd with a sweeper works good, I don't have a massive amount of leaves though.

I use a 42" RD deck and pull a 50" lawn sweeper for leaf pickup.  During Fall cleanup, I cannot make one full lap till the sweeper is full.   Keep in mind that sweeping ground up leaves concentrates the debris and it becomes very heavy, overloading the sweeper quickly causing excess wear and damage.  Forget about pulling the rope to dump, it takes all I can do to manhandle the hamper when I am off the tractor.  The sweeper does a nice job even though I set it high to leave some fine debris behind to benefit the grass and reduce the quantity to haul.  If it weren't for all the storage space required for a large vacuum, I would get one.
