bigredteacher 0 #1 Posted May 28, 2019 I want to relpace the ch14 kohler in my 314-8 1999 model I'm thinking about harbor freight 13 hp honda clone or a brand new kohler ch14. Any suggestions?
JoeM 7,874 #2 Posted May 28, 2019 It can be done but the output shafts will be different size from the Kohler (7466 pulley) 1 1/8" bore to the HF clone at 1 inch bore. The 1 inch pulleys are available. The new CH is going to be pricey. Might want to look around for a 14HP Magnum or a Briggs Vanguard 16HP. Both are strong and come up from time to time. There are a few members here that got engines for sale, another option. Pretty sure there is a thread on the HF conversion. Some big items besides the shaft size is the mounting, and fuel system, you got to make sure you can use something with a fuel pump with your tank in the back. and of course the muffler. Welcome to the square and I am sure someone will be along that has additional advice. Joe
JAinVA 4,629 #3 Posted May 29, 2019 (edited) I mounted a Pred 13 on an 416-H.The base bolt pattern is way different than a Kohler.I ended up mounting the 13 horse to an Onan base plate. The hood needed to be modified to clear the carb and I ended up cutting the headlight mount out to allow for the exhaust. It helps to raise the engine to match the crank centerline of the Kohler. Edited May 29, 2019 by JAinVA

Any suggestions? The brand name for that engine is "Predator" and you will find several threads on them on this site; I had one on a 1965 855 for a while and it ran well, but I didn't need the tractor so I sold it. RandyLittrell 3,885 #5 Posted May 29, 2019 (edited) @JAinVA Does the 13 horse predator have any charging ability? Are you able to run your PTO? EDIT......OK, I see you don't have a pto. Never mind! Thanks, Randy Edited May 29, 2019 by RandyLittrell

Lee1977 6,868 #7 Posted May 30, 2019 I used a 420 Predator no my home built Shortdog. This is how I hooked up the choke. There is a 1/8" metal strip with the 1/4" nuts welded to it inside the plastic.
Eric C 109 #8 Posted July 1, 2019 @JAinVA Nice job on the swap. I'm considering the same engine to swap out my Onan P220. Couple of questions. Is that 1" square tube that you used for the spacer? Have you used a deck with it? What size deck? Any noticeable crank end play from using a manual PTO? Does the Predator have enough power for the hydro and deck? My 520 was giving me headaches, so i put my 48" deck on my '76 B100 to get the job done. That 10HP seemed to run the deck fine, so i figured a 13HP Predator in the 520 should be enough for what i need.
JAinVA 4,629 #9 Posted July 1, 2019 (edited) Eric, I used 1 1/8' square tube at first then switched to 1 1/8 long round spacers to make changing oil easier. While not seen the Onan plate is notched under drain fitting as well.I have run a 42" deck and there was plenty of power. No noticeable end play which is to be expected as the crank has ball bearings. The Pred is now on the 520h crane tractor,I ended up changing the exhaust so as not to burn the paint off the hood.If you plan on running a hood count on having to do some modification. If you run the stock Pred exhaust and the hood has the V brace up front it will need to be removed.I also cut the head light bucket out and the left side of the hood needs to be bulged to clear the carb. That is shown in one of the photos.I had a junk hood to ruin but a stock hood will not fit.
