Brandon357 9 #1 Posted May 25, 2019 Hello everyone I picked up a c81 about a year ago and I've decided to fully restore it to its former glory. My question to yall is how to get started and what's the best way to take on this challenge?
ri702bill 8,613 #2 Posted May 25, 2019 (edited) Brandon: Not a bad looking candidate for restoring. Actually looks a bit better that our C81. Restoring can get a bit expensive - depends on the overall condition of the motor and the eight speed. Before you disassemble it , take a ton of pictures and more as you remove things. Wear items like the tie rods, brake lining, axle seals, and the fuel tank shut off and bushing are most likely going to need to be changed. RS Member Vinlyguy (in the Vendor heading) sells the repro decal package. Here's a tip - you can get the shift knob decals too - I used black vinyl car interior paint to repaint the knobs before putting the decals on and they look and hold up great. Do the decals with the knobs tightened in place. Bill Edited May 25, 2019 by ri702bill clarified item
ebinmaine 69,189 #3 Posted May 25, 2019 Hi Brandon! to Man, you found the best website for all the info and help and friends you'll need to get the job done. "Where to start"... Is a tough question but I'm gonna recommend pictures!!! LOTS AND LOTS OF PICTURES There are manuals you can download as well. That's a great candidate for a restoration. Many of us have that little 8 hp engine on our list of favorites, myself included. We have a 67 and a 74 here. What kind of experience, tools, workspace do you have?

You have a good soild tractor to start with co it should make a great project. A good place to start would be reading over a rebuild thread. This one that Jay did is one of the best in my opinion. 2
Achto 28,023 #7 Posted May 25, 2019 Nice looking candidate for a resto. After taking pictures, I start a resto by turning a tractor into a pile o' parts. From there it is clean, inspect, repair each piece. Then paint and reassemble. Sounds easy, right?!?! Not always easy but I enjoy doing it. I hope you have fun with your resto, Take lots of picture and keep us up to date please. 3

Before you make it into a pile of parts be sure to take pictures from every angle so you will remember how they go together. As you go along you can download them and make notes, it will pay dividends in the future.
