If you have dogs outside, be aware!

" The distemper virus can make raccoons act like zombies and can be deadly to dogs. Chicago-area officials have repeatedly warned locals that cases have been spotted in the region.

While humans cannot catch distemper, they can accidentally transfer it to their dogs, a fact sheet from a Canadian Humane Society says. The disease is highly contagious and can spread through a variety of methods, including inhalation and contact with raccoon feces."

There were also reports of distemper in Ohio raccoons which made headlines last year.

Raccoons can be really mean critters, especially if you get one cornered.

With their the huge canine teeth and long sharp claws, they can do some serious damage to flesh.

Add on top of that personality trait a diseased racoon with distemper, and you have a real danger.

If dogs are susceptible to the virus, I suspect other domesticated and some wild animals might be as well.......although I have not read specifically of any other species that are vulnerable yet.

   We don't have raccoons over here, but we do have badgers. Unfortunately those people who are not country wise and a lot of conservationist think they a lovely black and white animals and harmless. Always portrayed in paintings as such.

 In reality they are dirty, flea ridden, viscous creatures. Also carriers of TB an can infect dairy cattle. Like raccoons, they have very sharp teeth and long sharp claws. Many a terrier has been maimed and killed when people have been badger baiting. Which BTW is illegal over here.

I grew up you might say around em . 

We used to go coon hunting with the hounds. Plus l would catch em in traps 

and ya they are nothing to mess with. 

We had a rat terrier that loved to tango 

with them !

Well yeah.........but if those gleaming, star-crossed, glassy eyed, radically walking critters are a "really fer piece out there", this would probably guarantee you'd get one for sure, if you are a good enough marksman.
