More Deck mounting issues.

I suspect that the previous owner of this Raider 8 wasn't able to get the deck down where it would cut, When mounting the deck does the yoke in the photo straddle the shaft on the quick mount? It appears it is keeping the front of the deck from lowering because the shaft can't rotate. 

I've been unable to find any photos like this to use as a guide.

Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks.

That looks correct the level on the right side of the picture needs to be push back toward the rear tires.

I wonder why the front of the deck won't drop down when the deck is lowered.

I don't think the catch will close any further. Going to have to look at it again in the morning.

The attachment looks good. At the rear of the deck there is an adjustment that may need to be changed. Look for a long threaded rod going toward the front.

Looks fine to me. Look in the manuals section here to find the manual for your deck. Go through it step by step and the rod Richard is referring to will be obvious. :)

Thanks for your help guys. I'm going to have to check further for the problem. They had the lift rod screwed all the way up and I had to lower it down about half way just to get the front to hook up. Now it's loose when the lift handle is lowered all the way down yet the deck is still up. 

Sorting these things out is always fun. :wacko:

Post a picture of your deck on the tractor from a side and front view hanging under the tractor .       We will be able to let you know what may be keeping the deck from dropping by looking at the Big Picture!

  Well I got it sorted out and I feel kind of dumb. I was working from the lift handle side of the tractor and yesterday finally went around to the other side and noticed that the height adjustment was all the way up. As soon as I started to lower it the deck dropped and all works good now. Would have liked to kick myself in the fanny for that one. Thanks for all your advice but there is no help for stupid. Guess it happens though.

   The WH is now all back together with a rebuilt 10 hp engine and running nicely. The deck sounds good and came with new blades. The drive belt needs replacing but will wait until I know everything else is in good shape.

Thanks again for all your suggestions and confirmation that the deck was mounted correctly.

Forgot to mention the muffler. I know you guys picked up on it and it will get rerouted after the proper fittings are acquired. Not looking forward to getting that rusty nipple out of the head. :wacko:

You do not have to take the pipe nipple out of the head if the nipple is straight. Just unbolt everything from the pipe nipple to the muffler , leave the elbow on the muffler , and slip the muffler elbow over the pipe and clamp it down. The muffler should set in front of the engine and the exhaust pipe exits out the side of the tractor.

 

Looks like someone added some parts between the nipple and muffler elbow to route the muffler a different direction.

     So I take it out to mow today and learned another lesson about WH tractors. I start mowing and it is scalping the lawn and I mean really scalping the lawn. So I raise the deck adjustment and still scalping. The wife walks by and I can tell she's not impressed with the way the lawn looks.  Raise the lift handle and no better. Try to turn and run into the back of the deck with the rear wheels. Then I notice the deck is actually laying on the ground. Turns out the Latch ( must a better name for it) that holds the front of the deck up has opened and the deck has dropped. Reinstall the deck and put a pin in the little hole in the latch and now it can't open. :techie-eureka:

   Now we are getting somewhere, The old Wheel Horse mows nicely and with only ten horsepower. I'm kind of impressed. I am going to figure out some way to put some suspension under the seat. Bad backs and rigid seats don't mix well.

It looks like you have an older style front QA on your tractor for a newer style Quick Attach deck ?? I am not familiar with the older style of QA , but something is different about the attachment point for that style of deck. The newer style QA locks the latch so it will not open. A swap to the newer style QA is super simple if you feel the need to do so.

 

Someone else will chime in about that style of QA.

 

Glad that everything is coming along on your Horse , nothing more aggravating when something isn't mowing right , and keeping the wife happy !!!

The original belt routing was as shown above. (Pic from Lane Ralph) Your tractor has been converted to the newer style mule drive. You could swap out the mid mount for the later style but there really wouldn't be anything to gain and it wouldn't change the mounting of the deck. Even the early newer style mount used a cotter pin to lock them in place.  :)

Thanks for enlightening me. Might explain having a little more trouble getting the deck hooked up. Went a lot smoother this last time. 

This WH is much more stable on the side hills than the New style Simplicity. Didn't have any tendency to tip. But you sit much higher on the new mower and it has suspension. 

   The thing that really gets me is the amount of horsepower the designers of these new mowers think you have to have. Simplicity is 48" deck with 25 hp. The WH is 42" deck with 10 hp. and mows just fine. Don't get me wrong the Simplicity is a very nice mower but over twice the HP? Has to be a sales gimmick.

Your old 10 HP Koler with its long stroke, heavy cast flywheel and crankshaft has the TORQUE of a much large HP new engine that has a shorter stroke and a lighter flywheel
