Looking at a Rear Discharge Deck

Recommended Posts

Skwerl58

I am looking at a rear discharge deck for my 414-8. I have read that most of the rd decks with the attach a matic will work . Is this true and what model decks are the best? What problems do I need to look for? Thanks!

36" rear discharge and 42" rear discharge both listed for the 414-8

(These decks used blades with a 3/4" center hole)

1979 model 95-36MR01 replaced by

1980-1982 model 05-36MR01

1983-84 model 05-36MR02

1985 model 05-36MR03

1986-1990 model 05-36MR04

1991-1993 model 05-36MR05

1993-2006 model 78305

1977 model 75-42MR02 replaced by - (Has the flat spindle belt idler pulley mounted on a flat bar) (Has multi-link hardware at the gauge wheel support)

1978 model 85-42MR01 - (Has the flat spindle belt idler pulley mounted on a flat bar) (Has multi-link hardware at the gauge wheel support)

1979 model 95-42MR01 - No ipl available

1979 model 95-42MR02 - (Has no multi-link hardware at the gauge wheel support)

1980-1983 model 05-42MR01

1984 model 05-42MR02

1985 model 05-42MR03

1986-1988 model 05-42MR04

1989-1990 model 15-42RC01

1990-1992 model 15-42RC02

1993-2012 model 78350 - (These use blades with 3/4" center hole)

Best to use these because the earlier models used blades with a 5/8" x 3/4" double-D center hole and hard if not impossible to find.

i prefer the r/d decks, i like the finished look due to the large rear opening discharge. they tend to empty out the build up before it happens. problems are standard for any deck, look for smooth blade operation , indicating better bearings, look at the  spindle pulleys for wear and belt condition . any deck rot ? due to neglect and no clean out . i regularly scrape out and lubricate the bottom side to stop rust/ rot. hope you find a good one , i managed to find one here that was in very good shape , the owner was using the wrong belt , giving poor performance. pete

Agreed, look for a newer 42"rd if possible. Those decks are very very sturdy. I have a horrible looking 42"rd I acquired from a buddy that is literally boxed on one side and round on the other.. patched with bits of an 81 Mustang. That deck still cuts just as smooth as anything. And being an 8 speed, you dont have to worry about clippings plugging your hydro fan.

I think they make the yard look better too.

I've been mowing with the 855 with the RD deck the last two weeks and had to switch back to Juan and his side-discharge deck this week because I was in a pinch. After dinner my wife commented on how terrible the yard looks this week from the rowed piles of clippings. I don't get that with the RD, even with wet grass it just leaves and evenly spread layer that blends in nicely. It also doesn't blow clippings halfway across the street, which my township feels the need to harp on every six months when they send out the newsletter.
