1990Onan520-H 15 #1 Posted May 9, 2019 I'm assuming they never made any but I'm debating fabbing up some sort of forks for the lift on one of my 520's. Would be real handy to just lift a pallet to move across the yard from time to time. Anyone ever done it?
WHX?? 48,788 #2 Posted May 9, 2019 Yah ..I think it was Craig from MO who just did this on a 520 with an FEL. I'm guessing you have an FEL on yours? Otherwise I don't think it's possible.
JAinVA 4,619 #3 Posted May 9, 2019 (edited) It really depends on what you want to do.If you want to lift a pallet and keep it level at various heights then a FEL will be useful. You could make an attachment similar to a fork lift to lift a pallet and keep it level.Picking up things, especially if you can't lift them on your own, with a GT and transporting them is great.Until I get my FEL finished this is my solution.Fabrication skills vary and you need to be motivated. Shynon 7,459 #4 Posted May 9, 2019 That is the next project up for my 520 with loader. Fab a quick attach for the bucket and a mast for forks.
WHX?? 48,788 #5 Posted May 9, 2019 That would be the cats meow Tom. Clamp on forks would put the load out too far in front for my liking but would be ok for light stuff
oliver2-44 9,695 #6 Posted May 9, 2019 @1990Onan520-H are you thinking about making some sort of forks that go one the Front or the Back of your 520H.?

oliver2-44 9,695 #8 Posted May 9, 2019 Do you have a Dozer Blade? If you just want to lift a few inches to move something across the yard you could make some forks to mount on it

Any thoughts on how to mount forks to it?
SylvanLakeWH 25,493 #10 Posted May 9, 2019 Google “pallet forks” and a bunch of images pull up that show different ways to fab them...

All that would be necessary is a "U" shaped attachment at the top of the blade and the forks could hang down near the lower edge. You would have to put some cables or a turnbuckle on the springs to keep the blade from tilting. 1

Now you have me thinking about making one, but I have enough project going! I'm thinking you could use the horizontal lip at the top of the blade that is roughly 1-1/2 or 2" wide to hang and clamp the forks to . So this would make the fork that hang off the top of the blade. At the top you could make a 2 piece clamp with a bolt that squeezes and clamps to that top edge. I thinking make the top part wide enough that there would be room for 2 bolts to squeeze it. One thing you would have to work out is would the blade trip springs hold the weight, or need to be replaces with some solid links. It would be neat, if the springs actually work, and act as a safety and trip if you try to lift to much weight. 1
1990Onan520-H 15 #14 Posted May 9, 2019 Thanks for the tips guys. I probably wont get to this for a while but I see it as something I'll eventually do.
1990Onan520-H 15 #15 Posted May 9, 2019 I'm thinking this guy here could mount up without too much trouble. Just lean it against the blade and figure some way to attach it. Weight is my only concern. How much weight can these 520's lift without damage? https://www.palletforks.com/46-pallet-fork-attachment-skid-steer-quick-attach-mount-2600-lb-capacity.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwn8_mBRCLARIsAKxi0GK5VN6S2aGGdipke-OgV_ilQJRbnaRdCR-Vn52hemuMVeq0N2duWqoaAo0BEALw_wcB

I've been considering this exact type of setup made from parts tractors. Any chance you have closeup pictures? @JAinVA
1990Onan520-H 15 #17 Posted May 9, 2019 This might be an even better idea for me. Buy a pair of forks and go pick up a beat up blade to just weld them directly to. My current blade is really nice so I wouldn't want to ruin it. https://www.palletforks.com/1-2-thick-pair-of-pallet-fork-carraige-bars.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwn8_mBRCLARIsAKxi0GJoZ6xoyGOrrwnpI8mEG0tYuKZC-rxbU8lLYnt1dnVZFfaj9U5e4rkaAvxyEALw_wcB

The rubber hood keepers give way after a while. I learned this by putting a third 25 pound weight in the hood. It does fine with two with them being wired in. A third weight breaks out your headlights, rips your hood keepers and dents the heck out of the hood. 😀
